The UCI PHIT program is a joint program with the UCI Joe C. Wen School of Population and Public Health and the UCI Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Science in collaboration with the Orange County Health Care Agency and the Oregon Community Health Information Network. The objectives are to (1) teach informatics and technology skills to public health undergraduate and graduate students as well as working professionals, (2) attract students from science, engineering, and other relevant disciplines to join the public health workforce, and (3) recruit and support the success of underrepresented minority students.
Your Role on the Team
Learns to use professional concepts to conduct and/or support analytical studies or projects. Works on problems of limited scope. Acquires skills to fully analyze issues and problems, gather data and information, find and evaluate alternatives, and make sound recommendations.
The UCI PHIT program seeks a qualified individual to serve as Outreach, Recruitment and Retention Coordinator to recruit and support prospective participants from underrepresented minoritized backgrounds in the UCI PHIT Program. Working closely with the Program Manager, Program Inclusive Excellence Directors, and the UCI PHIT Program Committee, the incumbent will work on outreach and recruitment to engage underrepresented students at UCI, promote the program through relevant student organizations and affinity groups, conduct co-curricular programming (e.g., peer mentoring, student identity building, student wellness workshops, and social support gatherings) to create a sense of community and inclusion for participants and support them in degree/certificate completion.
The coordinator will work with PHIT staff and committee to establish strong working relationships with campus partners (e.g., the counseling center, social workers, disability services, and student wellness and health promotion), and communicate with other academic and support units to help participants achieve progress in the UCI PHIT program. This will also include directly meeting with and supporting participants who are in the health informatics minor and the health and public health informatics graduate certificate program. The coordinator will also help train and oversee the PHIT Ambassadors. Some programming may occur on Saturdays and/or evenings, such as for student and internship orientations, student association meetings, PHIT Ambassador training, and celebration events. In consultation with the Program Manager, Field Coordinator, and Evaluation Specialist, the Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator will also help manage a recruitment database to inform expansion of a diverse applicant pool and monitor and analyze data support for continuous improvements in participant recruitment and retention.
This is a one-year, full-time, hybrid position, ending September 30, 2025.

Required:
- Skills to learn organization-specific and other computer application programs.
- Basic communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
- Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
- Basic skills to analyze and research information and learn to synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.
- Basic program and project management skills.
- Administrative experience in higher education.
- Knowledge of departmental/school/university policies.
- Multicultural competencies to work with students from diverse ethnic, racial, and other under-represented minority backgrounds.
- The ability to speak in public forums and conduct presentations.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred:
- Experience advising and developing support programs for students from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience determining barriers and complications affecting a student's academic success, facilitating supportive conversations about how barriers are impacting goals, and providing and supporting access to appropriate referrals to overcome these barriers.
- Experience working with WordPress, Canva, Slack, Zoho Campaigns, Google Suite.
Special Conditions:
- This job may require minimal travel to local partner sites and an annual in-person meeting with ONC.
- Requires some off work hours and ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends for special events as needed.
