Physicians Mutual is hiring for a full-time Staff Accountant in our Accounting Department. The selected candidate will prepare detailed financial reporting work papers monthly, quarterly, and annually. Ensures that work papers include sufficient detail to support financial statements and provide an audit trail for internal/external auditors and state examiners. Responsible for the preparation of various general ledger account reconciliations, comparing account balances to system-generated reports. Assists with the preparation of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, using the guidance of the NAIC Accounting Practices and Procedures Manual. Prepares complex financial reports as required or requested for rating agencies, corporate management, or other entities.
Job Requirements:
- College Degree in Accounting, or relevant discipline.
- 1-3 years’ experience in the insurance industry, financial institution, or public accounting role.
- Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and statutory accounting as applied to the insurance industry.
- Strong analytical abilities to determine proper accounting treatment of expenditures, receipts, calculate adjusting entries, structure file data, etc.
- Good communication skills to prepare management reports, provide information to internal/external auditors or state examiners.
- Knowledge of all relevant state and federal regulatory guidelines to complete required escheat returns, financial work papers, etc.
- Ability to remain current in changes to accounting regulations, guidelines, tax laws, etc.
- Ability to adhere to internal control procedures to ensure protection of Company assets.
- Strong knowledge of software programs such as Microsoft Office (Excel and Microsoft Word), Database reporting software, General Ledger software, Blackline and the ability to utilize personal computer for financial report preparation.
- Ability to complete simultaneous projects within strict deadlines.
