Position: Associate General Counsel - HR and Employment Law

The posted compensation range of $164,000 - $257,000 is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay Nebraska Medicine in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. Actual compensation for this particular role will be determined at the time of offer based on years of relevant experience.
Remote Work: Associate General Counsel Remote work from any location in the contiguous United States is available.

This position is an opportunity to join an in-house Legal Team with a collaborative and supportive culture. The attorney in this position will provide legal advice and counsel to Nebraska Medicine, an academic health system which includes two hospitals, a physician practice group, and multiple affiliated legal entities. Key responsibilities of this position will include:
- Serving as the primary legal advisor for Nebraska Medicine regarding human resources and employment law issues. The attorney will work closely with the Human Resources team to advise on all employment-related matters affecting Nebraska Medicine, including hiring and termination issues, workers’ compensation, benefits, discrimination, harassment retaliation, reasonable accommodations, leaves of absence, wage and hour issues, employment agreements, and employee investigations. The attorney in this position will manage, oversee, and act as the primary point of contact between the organization and external legal counsel on litigated employment law claims.
- Providing legal advice and regulatory support to departments such as Risk Management, Social Work, the Medical Staff Office, and healthcare operational leaders across the organization on a broad range of patient care issues and healthcare regulatory matters.
- Drafting and providing legal review of a variety of contracts, agreements, and other documents ensuring they comply with applicable laws and regulations (including the Stark Law, the Anti-Kickback Statute, and applicable privacy statutes and regulations) as well as minimize risk and protect the interests of the organization.
The attorney serving in this position may have additional practice focus areas within the organization as needed or based on the attorney’s specific experience.
Required Qualifications:
- Five (5) years practicing in a law firm or in-house legal department in one or more of the areas identified above required.
- Experience drafting and negotiating contracts required.
- Juris doctorate (JD) degree required.
- High ethical standards and integrity required.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while still demonstrating good judgment required.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills required.
- Strong analytical skills required.
- Ability to prioritize and manage a diverse and constantly changing workload in a fast-paced environment required.
- License to practice law in good standing in Nebraska required. If not licensed in Nebraska, must be licensed in good standing in at least one other state and willing and eligible to obtain Nebraska license within six months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience advising or working in employment law and employment-related areas of law or other healthcare law areas preferred.
- Experience advising academic health systems preferred.
