This is an entry level audit position. The Internal Auditor is responsible for assisting in the review and appraisal of the Leon County Clerk and Board of County Commissioners’ operations to determine the adequacy of internal controls, compliance with laws, rules and regulations, and to assure the reliability, accuracy, and completeness of financial records. The work is performed under the detailed supervision of the Audit Manager and is reviewed by observation, work-paper documentation, presentation of audit findings, and audit and ad hoc reports.
Representative duties and tasks expected of the Internal Auditor position include:
- Participates in a full range of activities which ensure operational effectiveness, performance and excellence of the internal audit function for the Leon County Clerk’s Office and Leon County.
- Assists in the development of periodic risk assessments of Clerk and Board of County Commissioners agencies and in the development of the annual audit work plan.
- Performs all aspects of individual audits and special projects as approved, from planning through fieldwork to report writing.
- Assists in audit follow-up procedures and monitoring activities to determine implementation of corrective actions by auditees.
- Attends in-house and external training opportunities as approved by the Internal Audit Manager to maintain applicable certifications and enhance skills and knowledge.
- Assists in providing assistance to the Audit Advisory Committee.
- Assesses and reports any real or perceived impairment to organizational independence and individual objectivity to the Audit Manager.
- Maintains affiliations with and participates in professional associations related to work of the division.
- Complies with the policy and procedures manual for the Division of Internal Auditing.
- Assists in operating and maintaining the Clerk’s Fraud Hotline and logs and responds to all calls.
- Assists external, independent auditors during financial statement audits, if necessary.
- Performs Tourist Development Tax audits as directed by the Audit Manager.
- Performs other related duties as appropriate or assigned.
Education: Bachelors’ degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or other related degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Certification and licensure: Although not a requirement for this position, incumbents seeking certifications as certified internal auditors (CIA), and/or certified public accountants (CPA) are highly desirable.
Experience: Two years of experience in internal/external auditing (governmental preferred), professional accounting, governmental fiscal administration or related experience desired.

- Ability to provide high quality customer service to all internal and external customers.
- Possess good personal computer skills in Excel, Word, and other software programs for analyzing, flow-charting and diagramming.
Security responsibilities: Must comply with all organization security and data protection / usage policies and procedures. Responsible for proper marking and handling of all information and materials. Shall not divulge any information to others without management approval.
Essential Mental Functions: Reading long, detailed and complicated documents and comprehending contents. Understanding complex information and making appropriate decisions while maintaining confidentiality.
Essential Physical Functions: Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time, perform repetitive actions, lift up to 25 pounds, bend/squat/kneel, hear ordinary conversation, and prepare and read written communication.
