GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIESThis is independent and/or supervisory accounting technician work an accounting program of an operating department
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASSAn employee in this class provides independent records maintenance and processing of transactions in such areas as accounts payable or receivables, maintenance and control of general ledgers and subsidiary accounts, and preparation of reports for one or more accounts. Employees verify, code, balance, maintain and report on the records relating to the County's or a department’s fiscal and business operations. Work performed requires the use of calculators, personal computers, CRT terminals, and typewriters. Duties involve maintaining single entry books or journals. Work requires the exercise of considerable judgment to ensure that transactions are in accordance with correct accounting and budget procedures and statutory requirements. Employees may review, and sign off on, the work of office support staff. Employees receive minimal supervision and work is reviewed periodically for results and conformance to policy. Work in this class is distinguished from the Accounting Technician I level by the greater complexity of work and more independence of action.
Duties- Analyze and verify bookkeeping transactions
- Document and post financial data to accounts or ledgers
- Make adjustments and reverse entries in journals and ledgers
- Prepare trial balances and lists of financial data for supervisory/management staff
- Reconcile individual and organizational accounts
- Participate in the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements and reports
- Summarize financial or statistical information
- Prepare routine tables, charts and graphs using elementary to intermediate mathematical formulas
- Monitor organizational unit's budgets
- Advise on applicability of transfers of funds to maintain accounts
- Authorize fund transfers within limited County or departmental guidelines
- May serve as a liaison with external auditors by providing data and reports regarding unit accounts
- Must perform well under all stress levels and possess strong time management skills as necessary
- Possess the ability to perform work independently as well as in a team environment
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other government employees
- Ability to present information clearly and concisely in oral and written form
Minimum QualificationsGraduation from high school or equivalency and three years of experience in bookkeeping or accounting support work
A background, credit check, and drug test will be conducted on candidates considered for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
- BS degree in Business Admin, Finance, or Accounting, or related field
- Governmental accounting experience a plus

1. Environment: Work environment involves normal, everyday discomforts or unpleasantness. Work area has adequate light, heat, and ventilation; environment is organized and stable
2. Hazards: Work presents no significant hazards to employees
May Require Driving
This position may require driving for this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business such as but not limited to attending conferences, meetings, or any other county related functions. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.
