The Accountant Senior is responsible for leading the finance team and executing day-to-day financial operations, ensuring the accuracy of the organization’s financial data and fiscal compliance. They lead and execute key financial tasks and internal controls, analyzing key metrics and financial reports that inform business decisions.
The Accountant Senior supervises and trains finance team members, maintains appropriate documentation, ensures financial compliance, and promotes continuous process improvement.
- Lead the overarching finance function; oversee and execute periodic financial reconciliations of accounts and project grants, maintain contracts, and prepare and report detailed analysis. Oversee approval and review of transactions for accuracy and investigate & resolve discrepancies.
- Execute financial reports and metrics based on specific timelines for varying key internal & external stakeholders to support business decision making; identifying areas of continuous improvement and leading on agreed upon implementation.
- Develop and maintain models in support of financial decision-making processes including cost analyses, and assisting in creation of annual budget and reforecast through collaboration with internal stakeholders.
- Develop and execute compliance processes and internal controls. Create and maintain financial policies and procedures to gain efficiencies while adhering to best practices. Ensure compliance with University standards and GAAP.
- Supervise the finance team. Lead on hiring committees, training, performance management, and support the activities of the finance staff. Provide constructive feedback and coaching as necessary.
- Serve as subject matter expert to support strategic finance initiatives contributing to development of systems to ensure business operations are financially sound and adhere to compliance standards.
- Other contributions commensurate with level and experience as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or similar field.
- Provide excellent customer service; exercise outstanding independent judgement with the ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities and deadlines.
- Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, with high attention to detail, and ability to follow-through on tasks until completion.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercising good decision-making skills, as well as the ability to function as a team player.
- Demonstrated proficiency utilizing database management systems as well as MS Office Products, cloud-based storage (e.g. DropBox), and the Google Suite.
- Leadership, training, and mentoring skills with demonstrated ability to consistently give constructive critical feedback.
- Proficient in Excel, including the use of advanced formulas, pivot tables, charts, graphs, and filtering.
- Experience in accounting software including account payable, balance sheets, profit and loss statements and accounts receivables.
- Significant experience in accounting or finance with progressive responsibility.
- Experience developing metrics and dashboard reporting.
- Some experience managing and training staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in finance, accounting, or similar field.
- Experience with UM systems including, M-Reports, M-Pathways, Business Objects.
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics.
- Possess a strong understanding of University procurement policies, including business travel and hosting expense guidelines.
