SUMMARY: This position invests in domestic and international private equity funds and co-investments. The Assistant Portfolio Manager is responsible for identifying investment opportunities, performing detailed analysis and underwriting, negotiating legal documents, and performing ongoing monitoring and asset management. This position also takes the lead on performing detailed analysis and working with the Lead Portfolio Manager to develop actionable portfolio strategy. Domestic and international travel is required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Proactively identifies attractive private equity investment opportunities and maintains comprehensive deal processing information.
- Performs quantitative analysis and due diligence on prospective investments including on-site visits, reference calls, writing associated reports, and presenting investment recommendations to senior management.
- Responsible for legal reviews of prospective investments and negotiating key business and legal terms.
- Administers portfolio activity including partnership amendments, cash flows, quarterly and annual reports, advisory committees, annual meetings, fund-level and portfolio analysis and reporting.
- Maintains knowledge of the private equity markets and awareness of macro and micro economic conditions and capital markets to form and justify investment recommendations.
- Interacts with internal and external parties including general and limited partners, consultants, intermediaries, legal counsel, and Investment Accounting.
- Assists in portfolio modeling to project the impact of potential investment decisions on portfolio construction, risk and returns.
- Develops and communicates information regarding portfolio performance and recommends actions to improve the portfolio’s construction and performance. Identifies, researches, and analyzes investment themes and preferably has experience with secondary sale activity.
- Assists with training Analysts.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Education:
- High school diploma or GED Required
- Bachelor’s degree Required
- MBA or Master’s degree in related field Preferred
- Direct relevant experience can be substituted for education (if applicable)
- 4 years of related experience in addition to the requirements in the Experience section below.
Qualifications:

Experience:
- 6 years of experience investing in private equity directly, private equity funds, or similar experience Required
- 4 years underwriting funds/managers, co-investments or direct investments Preferred
- 2 years portfolio construction experience Preferred
- 1 year direct or indirect supervisory experience of investment professionals Required
- PC proficient, knowledge of MS Windows operating system; intermediate to advanced MS Word; MS Excel; Internet Web Browsers (e.g. Edge or Chrome) and MS Outlook Required
- Experience with relational databases or private market software such as Blackrock eFront Preferred
Certifications/Licenses:
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or progress towards completion, highly preferred; CAIA preferred
- Registration and licensure with the State of Ohio Security Commission. Within six months of hire, the candidate must meet the eligibility requirements to be licensed as a State Retirement System Investment Officer (SRSIO), which requires either:
- Having achieved a passing score on one of the following:
- Series 63 exam administered by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA)
- Series 65
- Series 66
- Level One of the Chartered Financial Analyst designation
- Earning and being in good standing with the organization that issues any of the following credentials:
- Chartered Financial Analyst
- Chartered Financial Consultant
- Chartered Investment Counselor
- Certified Public Accountant with a personal financial specialist designation
