POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant CNO/Vice President of Patient Care Services works with the CNO and the nursing management team to develop and implement the organization’s plan for providing nursing care to patients. This involves developing the organization-wide patient care programs, policies, and procedures that describe how the nursing process is operationalized at Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital (MLKCH). The primary responsibility is for the quality of nursing care, assuring efficient and effective coordination and delivery of nursing services. The incumbent plans, directs, and coordinates the day-to-day operations and activities of multiple nursing departments to maintain standards of care. This position participates in hospital-wide strategic planning and is responsible for developing the nursing strategic plan and budgets as approved by the CNO.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Knowledgeable of compliance requirements for federal, state, and local accrediting, licensing, or regulatory agencies. Brings forward any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of the executive team. Takes appropriate action regarding concerns reported by department staff related to regulatory compliance.
- Conducts self in an ethical manner in support of the hospital’s commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.
- In close collaboration with CNO and medical staff leaders, establishes objectives for areas of responsibility. Coaches and directs the department directors to formulate departmental objectives including new services and programs, recruitment and retention plans, space, and equipment needs. Ensures plans are in accord with hospital strategic plans and objectives.
- Communicates objectives, plans, and related expectations to directors, managers, and staff, in the interest of their understanding of how they contribute and participate in achieving objectives.
- Ensures operating and capital budgets are developed, performance monitored, and actions taken to improve or correct variances. Analyzes data and trends to project future budget, strategic, and operational planning. Identifies opportunities for improved cost efficiencies and collaborates with team members to implement, ensuring high levels of patient safety, quality, and outcomes are maintained. Works with executive team, medical staff leaders, and department directors in the acquisition of equipment, facilities, new construction, and space allocation.
- Manages operations of nursing services, monitors performance on the culture of safety, quality, retention, staff engagement, and patient experience against best practice metrics. Develops performance improvement plan for nursing service and monitors the plan to achieve targeted performance.
- Oversees nursing administrative functions that have impact across nursing departments are effective, efficient, consistently applied, and meet regulatory requirements. Ensures an efficient and effective system is in place to establish and review/revise policies and procedures, with key stakeholders involved in the process. Creates an environment and systems to ensure policies and procedures are consistently applied, interpreted, and implemented across nursing areas.
- Monitors HCAHPS scores, working with department directors to implement action plans to improve areas not hitting target and celebrate positive results; identifies best practices and encourages consistent execution across nursing as applicable.
- Provides leadership for nursing areas; evaluates and coaches direct reports to high levels of performance, participating in counseling, disciplinary action, demotion, and termination as necessary. Develops leadership among direct reports. Ensures effective planning and plan execution to provide nursing staff orientation, ongoing training, and education to facilitate the provision of high-quality patient care. Works with nursing leadership to implement leadership development programs and opportunities for existing and emerging nurse leaders. Fosters, creates, and implements methods of recognizing and celebrating high performance.
- Creates an environment that values and supports innovation, new ideas, and open communication. Participates in evaluating, selecting, and integrating health care technology and information management systems that support patient needs and efficient utilization of resources.
- Delegates authority commensurate with leader position; promotes decision making at the most appropriate level, with escalation used as appropriate. Establishes and oversees shared governance structure and activities, facilitating staff alignment and engagement through shared decision making. Role models the incorporation of evidence-based practice into all aspects of nursing practice and management.
- Ensures recruitment, selection, supervision, development, and retention of nursing service management and staff. Ensures department directors create, implement, maintain, and adjust recruitment and retention plans in collaboration with HR. Collaborates with HR on compensation and benefits to ensure commensurate and effective in meeting recruitment and retention objectives.
- Actively engages in supporting and holding team accountable for survey readiness, ensuring current knowledge and compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory, licensing, and accrediting requirement changes affecting areas of responsibility and monitoring survey readiness on a regular basis, implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Advocates for and role models interprofessional collaboration; facilitates multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Supports resolution of conflict between individuals and departments by facilitating direct and respectful communication between parties. Ensures nursing collaborates with departments such as care management to progress patient care safely and ensure patient needs are met.
- Maintains and promotes a personal, professional philosophy of community involvement by participating in professional and community activities. Collaborates with schools of nursing and professional nursing organizations to create a supportive learning environment. Speaks at and attends professional meetings and conferences to represent MLKCH as a source of nursing excellence.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
A. Education
- Master’s Degree in Nursing required. Doctorate in Nursing Preferred.
B. Qualifications/Experience
- California RN license.
- Progressive leadership experience with a minimum of 7-10 years at the director level; previous VP experience strongly preferred.
- ANA Certification in Nursing Administration required.
- Previous experience in a safety net hospital preferred.
