About this opportunity:
This position provides an advanced level of technical and operational assistance and support to staff and departments as needed in order to maintain optimal operating levels of all computer systems; surveys technical needs of end users; inspects equipment; installs, maintains, and troubleshoots hardware and operating systems based on proficient knowledge of the information technology structure and applications utilized by The Salvation Army including Windows 2000 and/or XP environments; supports application software including the full Microsoft Office Pro suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher); assists end-users in database applications; maintains and troubleshoots campus network of computer systems; serves as a second tier support for network and backup functions; answers questions, resolves complaints, and provides the necessary technical service in an efficient and courteous manner. May serve as lead worker to other technical support staff by providing guidance and/or training in troubleshooting hardware and software problems and serves as “technical lead on assigned IT projects.”
Key responsibilities:
- Provides an advanced level of technical support and problem-solving assistance to all computer users on-site and in the field via telephone or on-site visits; works independently to diagnose and resolve complex problems and determines if the problem is within the software program, client application, or hardware.
- Responds to requests from departments for assistance in the resolution of problems occurring with computer hardware and peripheral equipment, operating systems, application software, network, data communications equipment, or client usage; inspects computer systems for operation, usage, backup, virus detection, and elimination, and approved software and hardware; fields questions concerning the operation and proper use of equipment and software; records each call received; updates and maintains each department record within proper files.
- Sets up and installs personal computers and peripheral equipment independently and may instruct other technical support staff in doing the same; tests hardware for proper operation; installs operating systems and application software; installs and configures network software and adapters; configures systems for appropriate and efficient operation.
- Installs/configures hardware and software such as ports, cards, tape drives, CD-ROM drives, memory chips, modems, backup devices, etc.; adds printers and additional workstations; sets up and configures systems and modifies software programs accordingly.
- Assists in troubleshooting problems and identifying the source of computer hardware/software problems including problems associated with inadequate documentation, the unfamiliarity of the user to the application, specialized projects or activities of users, improper operating system/application configuration, etc.
- Notifies the Information Systems Administrator when problems are discovered; develops methods to remedy problems and provides an estimated date of project completion; prioritizes repair work to meet the needs of users; informs users of progress of status of repairs; responds to users in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Installs new releases of operating systems/application software including that received from the Territorial Headquarters Information Technology Department; performs the necessary configuration procedures to customize the software application for use.
- Provides training and one-on-one assistance on the use of software applications to all computer users as required.
What are we looking for in you:
- A two-year degree from a technical or vocational school in electronics, computer repair, or related field, and
- Five years of progressively responsible experience performing a wide variety of routine and complex computer repair work demonstrating proficient knowledge of the information technology structure and applications utilized by The Salvation Army and experience performing advanced computer hardware and software installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance work effectively and efficiently with limited supervision, or
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Proficient knowledge of the capabilities of computers and peripheral devices used by The Salvation Army.
- Operational knowledge of the following: WINDOWS 2000 and XP, Lotus Notes, and Internet interface.
- Knowledge of the process employed to determine the applicability of a specific product to a given functional area.
- Knowledge of the computer operating systems is sufficient to accurately and completely train users in the methods and procedures.
- Ability to analyze and resolve advanced and complex problems with hardware and software independently and the ability to instruct others in doing the same.
- Ability to determine compatibility between various software programs and hardware including networking software.
- Ability to build and maintain an effective working relationship with staff and employees.
- Ability to serve as lead worker to other technical support staff by providing instruction and direction in the proper methods and procedures for performing programming work in The Salvation Army information technology structure.
- Ability to manage personal workload to accomplish objectives and goals as assigned IT projects as well as ability to communicate progress or barriers to management in an effective manner.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to read and comprehend technical terminology to train others in applying the same. Ability to keypunch information into a computer. Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy computer equipment (25-50 lbs.) on a frequent basis. Ability to stoop, crawl, and climb when necessary. Ability to conduct and lead group presentations.
Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
