Job Overview
Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Controller will oversee the day-to-day financial operations of the company, ensure accuracy in financial reporting, and provide leadership for the accounting team. This role is crucial in managing the company's financial integrity, compliance, and fiscal management. The Controller will work closely with the VP of Finance to develop and implement financial strategies that align with the company's long-term goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage all aspects of the company’s accounting operations, including AR, AP, GL, job cost accounting, payroll, and budgeting.
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
- Challenge operations staff on projections that are not in alignment with yours.
- Assist the VP of Finance in developing and implementing financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and all relevant federal, state, and local laws.
- Lead and mentor the accounting team, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
- Conduct financial analysis and present findings to executive management to support decision-making.
- Manage cash flow and cash flow forecasting.
- Coordinate with external auditors and manage audit processes.
- Collaborate with project managers and department heads to ensure accurate job costing, project forecasting, and reporting.
- Assist in the development of the company’s annual budget and long-term financial plans.
- Evaluate current accounting systems and recommend software upgrades or changes as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA certification preferred).
- 5+ years of experience in accounting or finance, preferably in the construction industry.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and construction-specific accounting practices.
- Experience with job cost accounting, project billing, and WIP (Work in Progress) reporting.
- Proficiency in accounting software (experience with Sage Intact or similar construction ERP systems preferred).
- Advanced Excel skills and ability to work with complex financial models.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent leadership and communication abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
- Procore experience preferred but not required.
