HSB has a great opening on the team for an experienced Portfolio Underwriter.
In this position you will manage, monitor, expand, and optimize HSB’s portfolio products for assigned Client Companies, with a focus on achieving profit and growth targets.
Support a key strategic initiative, to profitably grow our business acting as a catalyst to new product implementations and performance management of existing client companies.
Become the thought leader with Clients, bringing innovative solutions utilizing HSB’s vast resources of data, products and services.
Work to tactically deploy HSB’s capabilities to optimize and enhance our client partnerships.
In addition, work closely with Product Managers to deploy creative approaches for data analysis to understand and optimize product performance.
Design surgical strategies for corrective action to ensure rate adequacy, appropriate price segmentation and detection of leading loss trends.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors’ degree or equivalent work experience is required
- 5+ years of P&C insurance/reinsurance experience is required
- 3+ years in underwriting preferred
- Demonstrated understanding of commercial and personal lines insurance and reinsurance coverage, concepts, principles, exposures and processes to drive profitable results
- Demonstrated ability to translate large data analysis into actionable decisions
- Demonstrated understanding of rate development (pure premium), price segmentation & detecting leading loss trends
- Experience with responsibility for achieving profit and growth targets for a book of business
- Experience with negotiation and conflict resolution
- Exhibited ability to develop creative and unique solutions

- Financial Statement (Business Finance) knowledge and analysis
- General insurance/reinsurance industry knowledge
- Presentation Skills
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Portfolio analysis
- HSB Product knowledge

- Consultative and Strategic negotiation skills
- Strong project management skills to manage multiple concurrent projects and issues.
- PC skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, and Word)

- Action oriented with strong analytical, Actuarial skills, Statistical analysis, innovation and persuasion skills to influence change.
- Naturally curious and inquisitive to identify issues and solve problems. Resourceful in order to research issues, assemble support, and recommend creative solutions to underwriting issues.
- Required Travel: 10-25%.
