About The Role:
The Principal Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) Economist is responsible for identifying HEOR evidence gaps for Boston Scientific (BSC) products, developing research strategies, executing HEOR analysis, developing peer-reviewed publications, and communicating results. This is a technical position where you’ll be hands-on in leading evidence strategy, execution, and communication of HEOR projects for the BSC Endoscopy division. This role does not have direct reports but works closely with other members of the HEOR team to achieve BSC goals.
This role offers a hybrid work schedule of at least three days per week based out of our office in Arden Hills, Minnesota or Marlborough, Massachusetts.
Your Main Responsibilities Will Include:
- Develop, implement, and manage health economics and outcomes research activities for the Endoscopy division, partnering with the Health Economic and Market Access (HEMA) team and key internal and external stakeholders to support the market adoption of key products and advance understanding of specific disease areas.
- Lead the development of HEOR projects, including developing research protocols, selecting appropriate statistical methodologies, conducting data analyses using statistical analysis software, interpreting the study results, and communicating key findings to senior leadership.
- Develop and execute HEOR evidence to demonstrate the economic value of our BSC products through economic evaluation (budget impact models/analyses, cost-effectiveness analyses, cost-utility analysis), retrospective claims database analyses, burden of illness analyses, decision modeling, patient-reported outcomes, survey research, and evidence synthesis (targeted literature reviews, systematic literature reviews, clinical and economic dossiers for submission to health authorities, technology assessment boards, and payers).
- Identify opportunities where HEOR can support challenges facing emerging technologies and commercially marketed products and communicate business impact to senior management.
- Work with new product development teams to ensure HEOR needs are incorporated into product development, clinical evidence plans, and timelines.
- Author and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings and their importance at HEOR meetings and clinical conferences.
- Build relationships with key opinion leaders in the medical devices and the healthcare industry.
- Provide HEOR-related training to sales, marketing, clinical, regulatory, and legal to increase awareness and understanding of HEOR competency and its role in supporting market adoption of products and therapies.
Required Qualifications:
- Formal training in health economics, Pharmacoeconomics/pharmaceutical Economics, public health, health services research, epidemiology, biostatistics, or related discipline (Masters’ degree, PhD, PharmD, MD, or related fields of study).
- 7+ years of relevant experience in HEOR, preferably with experience working with new medical technologies in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or biotechnology.
- Proven track record of building and delivering administrative claims database analysis through abstracts/publications and/or interactive model applications in the medical device industry.
- History of developing, authoring, and presenting peer-reviewed publications and abstracts.
- Proven track record of presenting peer-reviewed evidence at clinical and industry conferences.
- Demonstrated success in developing HEOR evidence strategies aligned with business needs, including the ability to influence senior leadership.
- Practical experience and expertise in using statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, Instant Health Data (IHD), STATA, R) and statistical methodologies (e.g., logistic regression, generalized linear mixed models).
- Understanding of global and US healthcare reimbursement, policy, health technology assessment (HTA), pricing, and market landscape assessments, including evaluation of evidence for coverage decisions.
- Strong communication skills and experience developing interpersonal relationships with internal and external stakeholders across multiple functional areas.
- Demonstrated ability to make effective decisions independently and to work in a fast-paced matrix environment with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 10+ years relevant experience in HEOR, preferably with experience working with new medical technologies in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or biotechnology.
- Successful first or last authorship on multiple peer-reviewed publications and abstracts.
- Proven track record of building and delivering health economic modeling outputs, including retrospective cohort analysis, cost-effectiveness analyses, and budget impact models.
- Practical experience and expertise in using decision analysis software (Excel, Visual Basic for Applications/VBA, TreeAge, R).
