The Senior Accountant serves as primary support for the general ledger accounting team and point of contact to divisional finance and operational groups. Attention to detail and organizational skills are critically important for success.
This position will emphasize accounting acumen, general ledger detail, reporting accuracy, process improvement, set up of new communities, participation in the allocation process, presentation in meetings and training sessions, training of new hires and special projects. A Senior Accountant is expected to be well versed in the Shea accounting process; exhibit Shea’s Vision, Purpose, and Values; be able to clearly articulate, teach, and support subject matter; demonstrate management qualities; and pursue additional learning opportunities to add value to the accounting department.

Specific Position Responsibilities
- Manage the monthly close and financial review issues list, ensuring issues are resolved timely and accurately.
- Assist with the completion of, and conduct, monthly financial reviews with division and corporate personnel.
- Assist with various reserve analyses (i.e. warranty analysis, closed communities, etc.), monthly journal entries (i.e. home revenue and cost of sales), and quarterly processes (i.e. accruals).
- Compile and/or assist with the review of month-end closing reports, journal entries, gross margin by closings, general ledger account reconciliations, and financial statement packages.
- Review bi-monthly check run cycles for adequate support and approval.
- Prepare, review and analyze joint venture activity, including the preparation of financials to joint venture partners and financial institutions.
- Support of divisional operations teams, including adhoc reporting and information gathering.
- Collaborate with internal finance teams to support budget and forecast questions related to accounting processes.
- Assist in the management and calculation of some high-level cost accounting functions (i.e. land, construction and warranty allocable costs).
- Assist with the management and completion of internal/external audits and tax returns.
- Provide support to existing communities with an emphasis on the set up of new communities.
- Assist with identification and implementation of process improvement initiatives to streamline and standardize work flows within the accounting group.
- Ensure timely and accurate execution of key cross functional responsibilities, if assigned.
- Develop and demonstrate a mastery of both the “mechanical” and “theoretical” part of the month-end close process.
- Special projects, as necessary, and ad hoc financial reporting and requests.
- Commission calculations and maintenance for community representatives.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
- CPA or MBA or pursuit thereof a plus
- Public accounting experience, minimum of 2+ years, a plus
- Combination of 3+ years prior accounting/finance experience required.
- Prior homebuilder, construction or real estate experience a plus
- Prior hands-on experience with J. D. Edwards Enterprise-One and OneStream systems a plus
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel skills
