A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.
AIS is searching for a Stock Assessment Analyst for an upcoming project we intend to bid on. The analyst will participate in evaluating current fisheries distribution trends and then creating a framework to monitor future distribution changes. Climate-driven species distribution changes create uncertainties in the fisheries management process, which can lead to governance challenges as species move across jurisdictional boundaries.
Species distribution changes can also have important effects on fishery behavior, fishing locations, and market/shoreside trends. As conditions continue to change, understanding these dynamics and their impacts will be critical for reducing uncertainties in the management process and for developing climate resilient management and governance strategies.
Primary Function:
AIS is seeking a stock assessment analyst to synthesize available data to describe species distribution trends for managed species, and then create monitoring framework that identifies metrics to inform when a governance response to a distribution change may be necessary.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develop a comprehensive synthesis of data and other information regarding stock and fishery distribution trends for Mid-Atlantic Council managed species.
- Consult with fishery stakeholders, including advisors, to incorporate stakeholder and local ecological knowledge into this synthesis to the extent possible.
- Synthesize the available data and information sources to create a cohesive reference document,
- Develop a framework to monitor changes in species distributions and fishery locations for species managed by or of interest to the Mid-Atlantic Council
- Work with the Oversight Team to identify a subset of species to test the application of these indicators and metrics.
Compensation: Candidates will be paid a salary to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on candidates’ depth of experience. This is a full–time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate level degree in marine biology or related discipline
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience supporting stock assessments
- A strong knowledge of fisheries policy, science, and data, particularly along the East Coast, and an understanding of how information is used in the management processes.
- Experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, scientists, and managers, to seek input and develop management tools and/or recommendations.
- Experience reviewing fishery data and scientific literature, including ability to compile and synthesize large and diverse data and information sources.
- Familiarity with indicators and methodologies for assessing and monitoring changes in fisheries distributions.
- 3 professional references (name, email address and phone number)
All documents must be submitted for your application to be considered. If you have any questions pertaining to this opening, please feel free to contact the Talent Acquisition Team at talentacquisitionteam@aisobservers.com or 508-990-9035.
