The Sterling Group Credit Fund, L.P. (“Sterling Credit”) is a private credit platform focused on partnering with private equity sponsors to help finance and grow middle market businesses. Sterling Credit invests opportunistically across the private credit markets focusing on junior and senior debt, preferred equity, and equity co-investment. Formed in 2017, Sterling Credit has a unique sourcing advantage through access to debt of The Sterling Group equity fund deals, as well as select non-Sterling deals. Sterling Credit is currently in the process of raising Sterling Group Credit Fund III. Founded in 1982, The Sterling Group is one of the longest standing private equity firms in North America with $9 billion AUM.
We are seeking an associate-level investment professional to be responsible for underwriting new investments, monitoring existing portfolio investments, and assisting with broader fund reporting and performance. These requirements include industry research, LBO and credit financial modeling, data analysis, business due diligence, creating various internal memos, and various portfolio management roles. In addition, the Associate will assist with quarterly portfolio valuations, quarterly LP reports, fund compliance, and requests from the accounting team. The Associate will also be involved in continuous improvement projects and marketing efforts for the credit fund.
Critical success factors for the Associate are a high attention to detail ability to effectively communicate, an ability to think critically, a proactive mindset, a “can do” attitude. The Associate must have an ability to quickly climb a learning curve and actively contribute to deal team conversations.
Qualifications include an undergraduate degree from a top-tier university and a minimum of two years of analytical experience with an investment bank, national accounting firm, or private credit fund. Experience with the credit markets and NAV lending facilities is a plus but not a requirement. The primary skills needed to be successful in this position are:
Analytical skills including:
- The ability to understand a company’s business, competitive position and the market in which it competes.
- The ability to analyze and thoroughly understand financial statements.
- A basic understanding of GAAP accounting practices and corporate taxation.
- The ability to model, synthesize and analyze data using Excel with a particular emphasis on existing familiarity with LBO modeling and credit analysis.
- The ability to work with sell-side Analysts and procure written research.
- The ability to proactively solicit information from industry participants.
Communication skills including:
- The ability to quickly summarize the merits of a potential transaction in both written and verbal form.
- The ability to effectively summarize key points of conversations among Sterling Credit and its stakeholders.
- The ability to interact with management teams, financing sources and service providers to analyze and execute transactions.
- The ability to manage multiple workstreams and check in periodically to ensure effective prioritization.
Administrative skills including:
- Taking responsibility for the administrative details of a transaction.
- The ability to effectively monitor and execute multiple assignments simultaneously.
