COMMERCIAL LENDER I

Reports to: Commercial Lending Leader
Position Overview
The primary purpose of this position is to assist Members First Credit Union to deliver on its mission: To encourage a better tomorrow. Key Responsibilities
- Play an integral role in the commercial services team, collaborating and generating solutions for current and prospective members.
- Generate new loans, deposits, and fee income from new and existing members by following a proactive sales and business development plan.
- Serve as lead originator on mid-size and complex loans for the credit union, compiling and analyzing financial statements, pro-forma and other assumptions of project sponsors and guarantors.
- Provide expertise and guidance in negotiating and closing lending opportunities with members.
- Identify, evaluate, and make determinations regarding key credit/risk drivers and propose strategies to mitigate such risks.
- Understand the Credit Union’s lending philosophy and principles, complying with all policies and procedures.
- Protect the credit union’s safety and soundness by maintaining the quality of the portfolio, adhering to lending processes, regulatory/audit guidelines, and established risk management practices.
Duties and Responsibilities

- Deliver on the Credit Union’s Service Promises in every service situation.
- Create and execute a personal business development plan in accordance with the department strategic plan. Assist in creating goal and performance metrics within your development plan.
- Give input and support of the commercial services strategic plan, providing motivational and achievable team objectives.
- Provide underwriting expertise in all categories of transactions, apply analytics and guidance in structuring and terms in order to balance the risk/reward of the opportunity in order to serve our members to the best of our ability.
- Maintain loan portfolios, monitoring economic trends and bringing attention potential member impact to assist in portfolio reviews.
- Regularly attend Business Lending Committee (BLC) meetings, offering insight and expertise in potential deals in the pipeline, existing portfolio performance and overview of market conditions.
- Strive for outstanding member service while minimizing credit union losses by monitoring loan portfolio and repayment activities, taking timely action on renewals and delinquencies.
- Monitor business loans within assigned portfolio to identify deteriorating credit conditions and compliance with loan agreements, enforcing covenants when appropriate.
- Ensure annual reviews and site visits are completed ahead of time on a timely manner.
- Work closely with other lines of business within the credit union to cross-sell products and promote a strong referral network.
- Independently review and analyze financial information including financial statements, corporate tax returns, personal tax returns, rent rolls, account receivable aging reports and other information provided/obtained.
- Evaluate appraisals and other collateral information.
- Experience and understanding of internal risk rating system.
- Must work collaboratively and positively influence, creating and deepening relationships with both credit union (external) members and team (internal) members.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of the credit unions policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Strives to exceed credit union, department, and personal goals.

Qualifications and Expectations

- Experience directly related to the specific types of commercial lending in which the Credit Union is engaged in.
- Demonstrated experience in conducting commercial credit analysis and evaluating the risk of a borrowing relationship using a predefined risk rating system.
- Demonstrated experience in underwriting, processing, and conducting workout activities for the types of commercial lending in which the Credit Union is engaged in.
- Knowledge of the legal documentation necessary to protect the Credit Union from legal liability, including all relevant laws and regulations impacting commercial lending activities.
- Sound judgment decision making skills, including ability to assess risk.
- Ability to advocate for a member and their project at Business Lending Committee.
- Ability to advocate for Members First Credit Union when working with a member.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.
- Proven track record in business development.

- Protect the confidentiality of credit union staff and members by locking door or removing items from desk/workstation when away.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree, or similar education preferred, but not required.
- Three to five years of relevant experience in lending, finance community economic development or related field.
- Strong credit experience in analyzing business financial statements to assess the viability of a business.
- Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
