Position Purpose:
Provides accounting support to operations and controllership team members by ensuring the data integrity of financial information. Provides timely and accurate reporting and analysis to management and external agencies. Safeguards company assets and maintains internal controls in compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley.
Key Job Activities:
- Compile critical inputs into ATR processes for Stericycle US and Canada entities ensuring that all information provided by the entity (IPE) has adequately designed source data, parameters and report logic controls and that those controls are effectively operating. Coordinate accounting and controls work and related deliverables with internal/external audit and the internal controls group. Executes internal controls with proper supporting documentation ensuring risks are addressed. Identifies and remediates internal control deficiencies in the areas/processes assigned.
- Review account reconciliations for US and Canada entities. Track the status of open reconciling items including following up and engaging in a collaborative manner with cross-functional involvement making sure they are resolved in the time prescribed by company policies. Ensure all balances are supported with timely escalation of exceptions.
- Ensures that the team is preparing and maintaining adequate, accurate and complete management reports that help Stericycle’s functional leaders make insightful business decisions. Analyzes activity and work with operations to determine key business drivers of changes in trend. Documents financial statement analysis at functional and country level.
- Involved with compiling externally facing reporting and the support for the quarterly and annual deliverables for our external auditors ensuring that all IPE has source, parameters and report logic controls that are adequately designed and effectively operating. Prepares and/or reviews information for statutory compliance.
- Ensures adherence with all applicable US GAAP guidance and internal Stericycle Accounting Policies and related internal control standards.
- Reviews monthly journal entries with adequate support.
- Oversees company-wide month end accruals. Works with STP to ensure proper data from purchases flow through to General Ledger. Lead training sessions on accruals.
- Review processes to simplify while optimizing efficiency. Communicate areas where system and process enhancements are required. Make recommendations to continuously improve the Financial Statement Close Process (FSCP) standard work for all tasks critical to the FSCP closing process.
- Transition routine, low-risk areas to offshore team. Participate in knowledge transfer. Review offshore team deliverables, including journal entries and account reconciliations. Ensure quality of work and coordination among all team members. Evaluate key performance indicators.
- Document and review standard operating procedures.
- Coach and mentor for staff across the North American Accounting Team to help build a world-class accounting function with strong talent and growth opportunities for all.
- Advance tools, processes, systems, and initiatives of Accounting Team to enhance current accounting processes.
- Build relationships with business partners including District Operating Managers, Accounts Payable and serve as accounting subject matter expert in for operations for Controllership organization.
- Participate in staff development, mentoring, and continuing education opportunities.
- Prepare and communicate monthly ad-hoc reports, graphics, schedules and statistical reports. Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.
Experience:
- Education equivalent to Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
- 5+ years' experience within Accounting / Finance roles and supervisory experience
- At least 3 years of public accounting experience demonstrating a good understanding of GAAP, audit processes (internal / external), month-end closing processes, general ledger accounts, and financial statement formats; public company experience (preferable)
- Experience in effective leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills capable of interacting with staff, peers, and senior leadership competently and effectively.
- Highly Desirable:
- Prior experience designing IPE controls and MRC (Management Review Control) activities
- Prior SAP experience
- Advanced Excel Skills
