Unit: CMNS-Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center
Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Finance Coordinator will be responsible for sponsored and non-sponsored project accounts (including pre and post-award activities) for the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center Department. Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Responsible for sponsored research proposal preparation for the department. Work directly with faculty, providing assistance with preparing research proposals, including preparing budgets, other cost/price information, and non-technical documents (current/pending, formatting resumes, etc.).
- Ensure all budgets contain accurate information (salary, fringe, tuition remission, F&A rates, etc.).
- Ensure compliance with all sponsor and University requirements. Ensure all internal and sponsor deadlines are met.
- Reconcile sponsored and non-sponsored accounts, including reviewing expenditures to ensure they are in line with sponsor and UMCP policies, all documentation related to expenditure is easily available and accurate, preparing financial reports and projections for expenditures/burn rates, salary charges/charts, and review revenues for accounts. Enter encumbrances in BA4 and transfer expenditures/funds as required on accounts.
- Review and approval of subcontract and vendor invoices on portfolio of accounts they manage.
- Serve as liaison to University business offices and sponsor personnel regarding account expenses, and resolve any questions or issues that arise.
- A degree can be substituted on a year-for-year basis with experience in Financial Management with an Associate Degree.
Preferences:
- UMD experience.
- Familiarity with UMD systems – COEUS /Kuali Research (KR), PHR, BA4, Workday, and/or KFS system(s).
- Experience managing sponsored research projects in an academic setting.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience conducting pre-award activities (budget preparation, forecasting, gathering proposal information, reviewing requests for proposals (RFPs), reviewing proposals for completeness, etc.)
- A minimum of 3 years of experience conducting post-award financial management activities on sponsored research contracts and grants.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of federal grant regulations such as the OMB Circulars and Uniform Guidance with the ability to apply that knowledge to job duties. Familiarity with electronic proposal submission programs such as Workspace, Research.gov, eRA Commons, etc.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to work independently and to be able to multitask in a challenging, fast-paced department to meet deadlines and faculty requests.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
Salary Range: $56,000 – $70,000

Physical Demands: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
