JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
The basic function of this position is to plan, direct, control and monitor the following accounting functions; payroll, budget, accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, financial assets for the company.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
The Accounting Manager reports directly to the Controller.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Accounting Manager works independently but must have support from functional management for changes in business, financial reporting and other clerical personnel requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage and supervise the daily operations of the accounting department.
- Manage the month end close, including prepare necessary journals, financial statement preparation, financial analysis and supplemental financial reporting.
- Establish and enforce proper accounting methods, best practices, policies and principles (GAAP).
- Reviews period(s) financial results and business metrics for the company as a whole including various departments.
- Budget preparation and present comparisons to actual for review by management.
- Prepares sales/use tax filings and property tax declarations from towns
- Maintains familiarity with financial computer system necessary to support the business.
- Bank reconciliations and bank reporting
- Help with year-end financial audit activities and bank collateral audit in addition to random audits (union pension/health and state and federal tax)
- Constantly seeks ways to improve the value of the department to other departments within the company.
- Develops and uses effective communication techniques that keep information flowing freely in the functional departments.
- Flash reporting / forecasting.
- Other duties as assigned by the Controller
- Perform ad hoc analysis and special projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required.
Experience:
- Minimum four years’ finance and accounting experience.
- Supervisor/Manager experience required
- Food service distribution or retail industry experience a plus
- Sales/Use, property and corporate taxes a plus
Reasoning:
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations and problems concurrently.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram or schedule form.
Other:
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- People skills required for interaction with all types of people.
- Effective writing, negotiating and persuasion skills.
- Excellent skill in dealing with customers and vendors
- Familiarity with P/C based software and financial spreadsheet systems.
- Able to work under pressure to meet deadlines.

In addition to the essential responsibilities, the Accounting Manager will also be evaluated specifically on the following factors.
- Is Manager developing and mentoring staff to improve overall effectiveness.
- How efficiently Manager is balancing cash flow needs.
- Is Manager a team player when it comes to assisting other departments with information or work-related issues.
- Is the Manager assisting and taking on more responsibility of the Controller.
- Is the Manager developing the appropriate checks and balances to ensure company assets are protected and financial records are reported accurately and timely.
- Makes sure the company’s policies and procedures are adhered to.
