The Investment Management Division is hiring a Portfolio Manager/Trader. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits, including health insurance, paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, as well as retirement.
Recruitment Range: $148,000 - $185,000.
This position has been designated as Exempt in accordance with North Carolina General Statute § 126-5 (c12).

The Investment Management Division is the investment arm of the Department of State Treasurer, and actively invests and manages the State’s pension funds and other assets entrusted to the Department. Standing teams are Investment Grade Fixed Income, Public Equity, Private Equity, Opportunistic Fixed Income and Inflation Sensitive, Real Estate, Multi-Strategy, Risk and Asset Allocation, and Investment Operations. The Portfolio Manager/Trader assists in the oversight of the Public Equity’s internally managed and externally managed portfolios (US Equity and Non-US Equity) as well as provides continuous evaluation and management of risk associated with these investments. The position analyzes potential investment opportunities, interacts regularly with external manager/vendor relationships, and works closely with the team’s Investment Analyst in the completion of assigned duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct manager due diligence, manager search/selection and assess manager performance.
- Measure and manage portfolio risk, perform asset allocation analysis and portfolio modeling.
- Perform trade order generation, execution, and portfolio rebalancing alongside lead PM.
- Participate in the negotiation of complex legal documents, preferred terms and management fees that govern all public equity investments as well as assist in the creation of investment recommendation memorandums.
- Assist with ad-hoc reporting for presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
- Position requires ~ 25% travel.

Minimum Requirements
Qualified applicants must possess, and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:
- Working knowledge of the investment industry, trade life cycle, principles of modern portfolio theory, and statistical methods utilized to track and monitor performance.
- Experience presenting complex information such as financial data, economic conditions, and investment performance to senior management, elected officials, boards, and/or committees.
- Professional experience in trading and portfolio management, which involves selecting, evaluating, and managing a portfolio of internal and external investment strategies/managers.
- Experience using advanced tools for financial modeling and analysis (ex: Bloomberg, Tradesuite, SunGuard, FactSet, etc.).
Management Preferences
- Considerable experience with internal management of passive and/or active equities within a public or corporate pension plan, foundation, and/or endowment (front, middle, and back office).
- Direct investment and operational due diligence, manager search and selection and managing a portfolio of external investment managers within a public or corporate pension plan, foundation and/or endowment.
- MBA and/or CFA Certification.
Bachelor’s degree with coursework in accounting, business, economics, finance, investment, statistics, or related coursework and at least a 5-year track record of successful experience in trading and portfolio management involving selecting, evaluating, and managing a portfolio of internal and external investment strategies/managers within a public or corporate pension plan, foundation and/or endowment; or 3-year track record and MBA or CFA; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
