The Cary Police Department is seeking a highly motivated and analytical Crime Analyst to join our team. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in supporting law enforcement efforts by analyzing crime data, trends, and patterns to inform decision-making and enhance public safety. Responsibilities:
- Responds to requests for data analysis and information from command staff; questions staff about what the specific needs are and how the data will be applied.
- Researches and analyzes long-term problems town-wide. Provides analysis for resource allocation issues, completing monthly statistical reports, and analytical maps.
- Identifies series, patterns, trends, and hotspots as they occur.
- Prepares management information reports that are accurate, timely and formatted to simplify understanding and prevent misinterpretation of data.
- Provides information on demand; provides analytical support to operational division within department for strategic and tactical decisions based on needs and/or requests.
- Reviews reports daily in order to stay abreast of patterns and trends within the Town.
- Applies knowledge of criminal activities and law enforcement techniques into making analysis; considers geo-spatial and demographic factors into the analysis for compiling a data-driven approach to law enforcement activities; completes analysis for resource allocation.
- Performs criminal intelligence analysis of major crimes. Develops and links local intelligence information. Isolates, tracks, and assists in the prosecution of career criminals as identified in applicable local, state and federal codes. Performs specialized analysis for investigations and other specialty teams.
- Collects and analyzes crime reports, parole and probation information, arrest data, modus operandi information, field interview cards, citation information, and other crime and criminal related data; conceptualize and convert raw data to valid criminal intelligence information; detect and understand the distinction between crime patterns.
- Develops and maintains working relationships with internal units and external agencies; forms partnerships for the purpose of sharing information and generating new ideas, both locally and regionally.
- Performs maintenance of GIS data layers used by the Police Department by reformatting data from Records Management System (RMS), CAD, and other systems into usable format for analysis.
- Creates and maintains databases and creates customized reports; builds automated data mining and analysis processes within SAS Enterprise Guide; designs and executes specialized query reports and public safety analysis maps in order to analyze data and provide reports.
- Queries, transfers, manages, and analyzes RMS data using OSSI RMS and CAD system, Client Access data transfer program, and Excel in order to complete end-of-month department statistics.
- Uses additional mapping layers to analyze the possible effects that other geographical factors may be having on crime trends.
- Produces bulletins and reports in order to notify officers, investigators, and command staff of emerging trends and patterns to be used to guide tactical police activities.
- Compiles annual statistical data for annual reporting.
- Designs crime maps using the Town of Cary general GIS data layers as well as GIS crime data layers.
- Designs, implements, and manages various digital projects/plans/solutions to assist the department in intelligence gathering and analysis.
- Prepares analytical reports and crime maps for use in departmental meetings.
- Obtains knowledge and training in the use of SAS technology and software in order to perform data analysis and generate departmental reports.
- Keeps up to date on current analytical techniques through networking and research.
- Prepares and provides incident reports and calls for service reports for citizen requests.
- Prepares for and participates in community meetings, as needed.
- Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Minimum Requirements:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in criminal justice or related field with considerable experience working with crime and statistical analysis and GIS applications. Completion of crime analysis and GIS courses is preferred.
