We are seeking a high-calibre, enthusiastic Consultant Clinical Oncologist with a sub-specialty interest in Urology & Skin to join our team at the North West Cancer Centre (NWCC), Altnagelvin Hospital, one of the region's acute hospitals, in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.
The North West Cancer Centre has been operational since November 2016, providing outpatient, Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT), radiotherapy, and inpatient services to a population of approximately 500,000. The NWCC provides an across-border radiotherapy service to patients in County Donegal, Republic of Ireland, and works closely with the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre in Belfast.
NWCC has 3 TrueBeam linear accelerators with expansion capacity for a fourth linear accelerator. The linacs are currently delivering daily image-guided VMAT/IMRT radiotherapy for all radical patients. The centre is utilising DIBH and 4D cone beam CT and has MRI planning for prostate, rectum, and head and neck cancers. Planning is carried out on the Varian Eclipse system, and the workflow of patients through radiotherapy is managed by the Varian ARIA system.
The North West Cancer Centre has its own diagnostic CT and MRI scanners, dedicated clinical trial teams, 27 inpatient beds, and the Sperrin Suite, which has 13 outpatient clinical rooms, 25 treatment chairs, and 6 long-day treatment rooms for all SACT modalities.
The centre achieved reference site “centre of excellence” status with Varian Medical Systems in 2018, has previously been a reference site for IBA Dosimetry, and is currently under reference site agreement with the Sun Nuclear Corporation. The centre achieved and has subsequently maintained accreditation to CHKS ISO 9001. Radiotherapy Physics gained accreditation to UKAS MPACE BS 70000 in 2020 and is currently one of only two departments in the U.K. to hold this specific Medical Physics and Associated Scientific Services accreditation.
Derry - Londonderry is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fourth-largest city on the island of Ireland. The old walled city lies on the west bank of the River Foyle, which is spanned by two road bridges and a footbridge, ‘The Peace Bridge.’ The district is administered by Derry City Council and contains both Londonderry Port and City of Derry Airport. The Greater Derry area, about 20 miles (32km) from the city, has a population of 110,000. The city maintains a vibrant cultural scene and in 2021 was voted one of the Irish Times top 3 cities to live in. Derry – Londonderry is a prime location for exploring the spectacular scenery of Donegal, the Causeway coast, and the North Antrim Coast, with a public transport service providing regular bus/train service to Belfast City in approximately 90 minutes. The city has a full range of top-quality academic institutions, from primary, secondary, and grammar schools, through higher and further education to its own university campus at Magee College, part of the multi-site University of Ulster.
