Job Summary: The College of Health is opening a new shared Research Suite and is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and organized individual to fill the role of lab manager (or specialist). The College of Health HPER E Research Suite includes exercise intervention and exercise testing spaces, a small wet lab, a biomechanics and motion capture lab, and a sleep and circadian research suite. The lab manager/specialist will, under minimal supervision, be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing various aspects of lab function, as well as basic laboratory bench work. The successful candidate will have experience with human subjects research, chemical hygiene, biosafety, and management/training of students and staff within a laboratory setting.
Responsibilities:
- Manage day-to-day activities within the College of Health HPER E Research Complex, including ensuring operation of essential equipment (YSI, treadmills, resistance exercise equipment, DXA, -80 freezers, etc.), managing service contracts, ensuring adequate supplies for routine experimental procedures, and scheduling human subjects research activities.
- Act as primary point of contact for all lab communications between multiple PIs and provide oversight of all lab personnel (~30 students and staff).
- Serve as emergency contact for lab space.
- Complete and maintain all necessary EHS, biosafety approvals and ensure compliance with all institutional IRB, EHS, biosafety, and other policies and procedures.
- Manage various aspects of lab maintenance, organization, and administrative tasks.
- Perform basic laboratory benchwork, including processing human blood, saliva, and urine samples, and analyzing plasma/serum samples for basic markers (such as blood glucose).
- Develop and review/revise SOPs as necessary.
- Oversee ordering, stocking, and inventory of laboratory supplies.
- Train students, staff, and other users of the space on laboratory SOPs and maintain training records.
- Develop budget management approaches and act as a liaison between PIs and department/college administrative offices.
- Liaise between laboratory PIs and facilities staff to handle issues impacting research.
- Oversee proper use of designated laboratory parking spaces for research participants.
- Manage assignments of workspace for trainees and staff.
- Provide laboratory information to PIs for grant preparation.
- May coauthor research abstracts and manuscripts.
Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:
Nearly Continuously: Office environment.
Often: Infectious disease, oils (air or skin exposure), hazards (physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding, or exposure to chemicals).

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus four years of related full-time laboratory experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
Preferences:
Experience with exercise physiology-based research.
Experience managing a research space shared amongst multiple PIs.
