The School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University seeks to hire a qualified NAGPRA Project Lead to manage, under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Repatriation in the Center for Archaeology and Society Repository, tasks associated with curation and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) compliance for Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) collections. The NAGPRA Project Lead will oversee the locating, documenting, and preparing of ABOR NAGPRA collections. Additional duties include conducting background research to determine archaeological and cultural context through archival documents, and assisting with the creation of relevant documents for curatorial management and NAGPRA compliance.
To prepare these collections in accordance with Center for Archaeology and Society Repository processes, relevant collections must be located, documented, assigned artifact types for cultural affiliation, cataloged according to contemporary archaeological and museum collection management standards and best practices, assessed for removal provenience and context, and the collection information entered into relevant databases.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years of related experience; OR, Seven (7) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with NAGPRA related collections documentation (1-2 years)
- Demonstrated knowledge of the archaeology and material culture, history, and ethnography of the American Southwest
- Evidence of a Bachelor’s degree with a focus in archaeology, anthropology, or museum studies
- Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate handling of curated archaeological collections
- Experience with archival research
- Supervisory experience with students
- Experience in using organizational and project management skills
- Evidence of effective communication skills
- Experience working independently and collaboratively in a team
