The Opportunity:
University of Michigan Health (UM-H), a world-class organization, is seeking a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Regional Medical Group (RMG). The CAO will report and is a dyad partner to the President, Regional Medical Group. The CAO is a pivotal position, responsible for providing administrative leadership toward the development of an aligned and coordinated multi-specialty employed medical group, through the integration of the currently separate Sparrow Health Medical Group and the University of Michigan Health Partners.
The Position:
The Regional Medical Group Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) will have a dyad partnership with the President, Regional Medical Group. Together they will lead the successful clinical, operational, strategic, and cultural integration and ongoing management of the new Regional Medical Group. The CAO will oversee the operational aspects of ambulatory clinics and ancillary facilities associated with RMG, supervising direct report management personnel and collaborating closely with all other RMG management functions.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Master’s degree in health services management (MHA or MPH) or business administration (MBA) or equivalent degree is required.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience as a senior leader in physician practice leadership position within a multi-hospital, integrated system.
- Detailed knowledge of physician practice management systems with the ability to analyze and identify opportunities for operational and financial optimization.
- Demonstrated experience developing effective, trusting, credible and collaborative relationships with physicians and advanced practice providers.
- Proven work experience in enhancing process and performance standards, as well as leading satellite ambulatory physician practice centers.
- Proven track record in improving productivity and access.
- Experience in designing contemporary physician compensation programs and knowledge of how to incentivize physicians.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, mentor, and inspire a diverse group of physicians and clinicians.
- Experience within a highly complex, matrixed health system environment.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge and experience in management principles to implement institutional performance improvements.
- Experience with value-based care models and supporting population health initiatives.
- Change management experience and ability to lead during system transformation.
- Integration experience is strongly preferred.
- Track record of success at managing, mentoring, and motivating team members.

The U-M Health Regional System includes the blending of two legacy health systems: University of Michigan Health-West and Sparrow Health System, which joined University of Michigan Health in April 2023. The Regional Health System is led by Margaret Dimond, PhD and includes 7 hospitals, 12,000+ employees, and $1.8B in net operating revenue.
The Location:
Lansing, MI is the state capital with a rich and diverse history. It is centrally located and within 90 minutes of 90% of the state’s population, making it a great base for day trips throughout the southern half of the lower peninsula.
