Humana is seeking a Senior Economist to lead the development and management of advanced econometric models to forecast and understand drug utilization trends and costs.
As a Senior Economist, you will use open-source programming languages (R or Python) in Databricks to analyze large, complex, but well-structured data sets from our data warehouse (SAS is also available if desired). Your work will focus on understanding structures underpinning drug utilization and costs to create and maintain time series forecasts. You will act as our analytics organization's technical expert as it relates to Times Series Forecasting and Econometrics. This position offers the opportunity to apply your econometric skills in a highly impactful healthcare setting. Work done in this role could potentially be published externally depending on content but is not a requirement.

Role Responsibilities
- Advanced Econometric Modeling - designing and maintaining sophisticated time series models that capture the nuanced structures underpinning macro trends in drug utilization and costs by product category, mix, and therapeutic areas, potentially including approaches like VARMAX, UCMs, etc.
- Methodological Innovation - Explore and implement new statistical or machine learning techniques to improve forecasting accuracy and reliability.
- Time Series Forecasting - generate precise forecasts for drug utilization trends and cost projections, contemplating seasonality, level trends or regime switches, interventions, and other relevant factors.
- Data Acquisition and Limited Data Engineering - with some assistance, access structured data from internal data warehouse using SQL or other languages to prepare data for analysis and forecasting.
- Collaborate - partner with cross-functional teams to interpret data insights and align forecasts.
- Documentation & Quality Assurance - maintain thorough documentation of models, methods, and assumptions. Implement best practices to ensure reproducibility of work.
- Peer Review - conduct reviews of similar/adjacent work done by other analytics associates and provide feedback on methods, assumptions, and validate the soundness of their results (when experienced enough to do so).
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Economics, Econometrics, or related OR Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline with sufficient academic coverage of econometric techniques.
- Expertise in applying econometric techniques to real-world problems, with either professional work experience or publication history.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with other data and analytics associates (informaticists, data scientists, actuaries) to communicate results and iterate on models.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Pharmacy Benefit Manager, Pharmacy, or Healthcare data, in particular drug utilization, claims, costs and forecasting.
- Experience with techniques that can improve our ability to understand and/or forecast product mix, hierarchies, rare/low-frequency events.
- Experience with time-series based causal modeling.
Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40
Pay Range
The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc. $86,600 - $119,200 per year. This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
