INTRODUCTION:
The Spokane Tribe of Indians is a federally-recognized Indian tribe comprised of nearly 3,000 members with a 160,000-acre reservation located about 40 miles northwest of the city of Spokane Washington. The Office of the Spokane Tribal Attorney provides legal support to the Tribe’s various governmental departments and businesses.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Staff Attorney works under the direction of the Tribe’s General Counsel, who directs the Office of the Spokane Tribal Attorney (OSTA). OSTA advises the Tribal Business Council and the Tribe’s government, its departments and agencies, and acts as the Tribe’s Code Reviser. OSTA also advises the Tribe’s enterprises and represents the Tribe before tribal, state, and federal courts.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR POSITION:
Strong negotiation, interpersonal communication skills, and interdepartmental communication skills. Be willing to engage in creative problem-solving and thrive in an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural work environment. Experience in advising governmental and business entities in contracts, procurement, and compliance issues are strongly preferred. Employment law experience is also preferred, including human resources issues.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Candidate must be licensed to practice law in Washington State and in good standing, or be licensed to practice law in another state and become licensed to practice law in Washington State within 6 months of hiring.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Candidate must have graduated from an accredited law school and have a minimum of seven years of experience as a government lawyer with an emphasis on contracts, procurement, and compliance or equivalent experience in private practice.
