SOME (So Others Might Eat) provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in the District of Columbia, helping them to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help to transform the lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them. Our more than 30 programs throughout the district provide comprehensive services that lead to mental and physical health, continued sobriety, job training, living-wage employment, and affordable housing. We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.
Compensation: We offer our employees a competitive compensation and benefits package that reflects our organizational culture, mission, and core values. The hourly range for this position is $19.46 to $22.86 and may commensurate with experience.
SOME (So Others Might Eat) is seeking a full-time Transitional Housing Counselor at Leland Placelocated in Northeast, Washington, DC.
Position Description: Provides counseling and supportive services to residents of Transitional Houses, Assists clients in developing healthy coping skills. Oversees daily residential operations.
Required: HS Degree/GED; 3-5 yrs experience in social services, experience providing services in addictions or mental health treatment
Preferred: Bachelor's Degree; 5 + years experience in social services; experience providing services in addictions or mental health treatment, Drivers License.
Schedule: Monday-Friday 4:00 pm-12:00 am (40 hours a week)
Required License/Certification: CPR/First-Aid, AED
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of substance abuse and mental health issues
- Conflict resolutions skills
- Flexibility with the ability to multi-task despite competing priorities
- Organized with attention to detail
- Relationship building skills
- Ability to communicate with diverse audiences
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Ability to stay calm in crisis situations
- Creative problem-solving skills
- Ability to set professional boundaries
- Proficient with MS Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Expected Contributions:
Case Management:
- Provide counseling and supportive services to the client
- Provide care coordination in conjunction with Case Manager, collaborative with BHS counselors
- Monitor that treatment plans are followed
- Facilitate weekly life skills group
- Correspond with agencies for client treatment
- Assist with client transportation to appointments, as needed
- Monitor the medication being taken and document it appropriately
- Write progress notes compliant with regulations within twenty-four hours of the session
Program Operations:
- Oversee daily operations in house
- Update log book and provide house walk-throughs
- Ensure chores are completed
- Prepare dinners that were delivered
- Maintain food inventory
- Maintain a therapeutic environment within the house
- Participates in required training and development activities
- Full cooperates with the organization's compliance and continuous quality improvement (CQI) program
- Creates a safe work environment and uses sound judgment in interactions with clients and staff to maintain safety
- Reports to work on time daily and use clock appropriately
- Performs other related duties as assigned
