A part-time Programmer Analyst (step I) position is available in the lab of Dr. Charleston Chiang at USC. The Chiang lab utilizes cutting-edge analytic tools to address questions at the intersection of human medical and population genetics. In particular, we have a strong interest in using genomic data to understand the evolution and architecture of complex traits and the history of diverse human populations. These insights will be critical for future medical genetics studies and in practicing personalized medicine. The successful candidate will be learning and assisting in maintaining and modifying analysis pipelines to be applied to existing projects in the lab. The candidate will assist with accessing and documenting data available through public repositories such as dbGaP, or All-of-Us Research Hub, assist in writing, testing, and debugging existing analysis pipeline, and adapting pipeline to USC's compute cluster as needed. Generally, the successful candidate will be working under the supervision of a senior staff scientist or the PI.
Minimum Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree in genetics, computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field is required. The applicant should have general knowledge of programming, knowing one or more programming languages such as C++, Python, R, or others. The applicant should have demonstrated experience working in a team, and communicate effectively with other team members both verbally and in writing. Experience working with Unix-based computing environment is highly desired.
Additional Information:
The start date for this position is flexible, and can start as early as October 2024. The position is expected to be in-person, and is ideal for post-baccalaureate applicants who are looking to learn computational research and participate in research in preparation for applying for graduate or other professional schools. Preferences will be given to under-represented minorities in STEM fields, though not a requirement.
Compensation:
The hourly range for this position is $28.13 - $35.16. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
