Job Overview
Stop Foodborne Illness (STOP) is a national, 501(c)(3), public health organization whose mission is to collaborate with partners in academia, the food industry, and government to prevent foodborne illness. We advocate for effective food safety policy and facilitate culture change to increase food safety.
As STOP’s leader, the CEO serves as the voice of the organization and is responsible for leading a wide range of activities that address and enrich the interests/concerns of STOP’s major constituencies—consumers, food industry alliances, policymakers, and other partners. Combining inspirational leadership and sophisticated management abilities, the CEO will advance the organization in terms of culture, capability, processes, and impact. The CEO will inspire innovation and ensure that STOP continues to be well-positioned to advance its mission.
Major areas of focus include:
- Strategic Planning & Execution with board of directors
- Fundraising
- Leading STOP policy initiatives
- Organizational Growth (i.e., consumer outreach, Alliance membership, donors/supporters, policy maker outreach/impact)
- Consumer engagement (via social media and other news outlets)
- External affairs/food industry relations and academic partnerships
- General daily business operations
Duties
- Executive Leadership and Organizational Management
- Provide thoughtful and visionary executive leadership that is inclusive, transparent, and empowering.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization and ensure its overall successful long-term operations.
- Conduct strategic decision-making through utilization of performance metrics, innovative thinking and horizon scanning.
- Manage and motivate staff, overseeing processes such as hiring, separation, ongoing staff development, performance management, and compensation and benefits.
- Establish goals, objectives, and operational plans in collaboration with the Board, staff, and other leaders.
- Board Governance
- Maintain effective, regular and ongoing communication with the Board.
- Provide effective and timely communications/reports that enable board members to fulfill their governance responsibilities.
- Attend all Board meetings and provide reports and updates on current work and organizational progress.
- Development and Fundraising
- Develop and drive fundraising in collaboration with the Board.
- Champion efforts to develop new sources of funding through individual donations, corporate and foundation grants.
- Financial Management and Administration
- Provide guided oversight of the administrative and operational functions of the organization.
- Assume fiduciary responsibility for the fiscal integrity of the organization.
- Monitor budget and manage daily financial operations to ensure maximum utilization of resources.
- External Relations and Communications
- Serve as chief spokesperson and represent the organization at public events, conferences, and partnership meetings.
- Manage all aspects of the organization’s marketing and public relations.
Requirements
- Experience in a senior leadership position (preferably CEO or executive director) within the food or food-related sector.
- Strong business acumen and a history of providing visionary leadership at the executive level.
- Expertise in food safety, public policy, and public health.
- Proven experience executing organization growth and leading a successful nonprofit.
- Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and public speaking skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study, preferably an advanced degree.
