Hispanic Federation believes that participating in civic life is an essential aspect of our mission to empower and advance the Latino community in the United States, from registering to vote and participating in local elections to getting counted in the Census and being involved in policy discussions. Since its inception, the HF’s civic engagement team has worked to engage community members across the country to participate fully in their civic duties. In North Carolina, HF’s civic engagement team has registered over 1,200 people to vote and engage with over 130,000 statewide voters since 2020.
Who We Seek
Hispanic Federation is seeking a Canvass Director for Civic Engagement to support community outreach via door knocking, community events, and phone banking. The Canvass Director will work closely with the Hispanic Federation team to create meaningful impact in community outreach, supporting community access to fulfilling their civic duties for specific, underserved communities.
The successful candidate will have experience in supervising teams of canvassers, managing their engagement, and ensuring they are adhering to all required rules and regulations. The Canvass Director serves the quality assurance staff member and will be tasked with validating the correctness of all forms received and submitted to the NC Department of Elections.
Hispanic Federation is a nonpartisan 501(c)3 nonprofit working to ensure all eligible members of the community are engaged in fulfilling their civic duties and are informed voters committed to the legislative process. Canvassers and Canvass Directors are trained to adhere to regulations to ensure the proper completion of voter registration and GOTV duties.
Position Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Reports to: Director for NC and Mid South Operations
Status: Full-time, Temporary – April 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Scout locations, prepare maps for approval, identify new venues for engagement in conjunction with the Director for NC and Midsouth Operations.
- Prepare schedules in conjunction with HF’s CE team, manage record of hours worked by canvassers for approval by HF’s CE team.
- Support in-person voter registration work in key locations as part of outreach efforts.
- Attend meetings and trainings regarding voter registration work; remain informed of all best practices and any changes to regulations for Voter Engagement and Get Out the Vote work.
- Report all progress and problems in carrying out duties to the Director for NC and Midsouth Operations.
- Ensure canvasser packets and supplies are prepared daily and properly deployed.
- Complete canvasser spot checks.
- Manage quality control of voter registration forms.
- Assist in the training of new canvassers.
- Deliver completed voter registration forms to the Board of Elections.
- Manage voter registration forms inventory and supplies.
- Adhere to all nonpartisan guidelines, abiding by IRC 501(c)(3) regulations; and federal, state, and local laws and all local election regulations while executing operations under this agreement.
- Carry-out any other duties needed to support Hispanic Federation’s civic engagement work.
Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum Associate’s degree and two campaign cycles of experience with community outreach and engaging East Carolina’s diverse population around access to services and / or civic engagement.
- Experience supervising a team of canvassers and addressing needs of their teams as they arise.
- Must be able to adhere to Hispanic Federation’s COVID-19 safety plan.
- Experience with community outreach and engaging North Carolina’s diverse population around access to services.
- Have access to reliable, consistent internet and have access to technology to properly engage in required technology and applications.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time and as required during community and engagement events.
- Strong understanding of Latino and social justice issues.
- High energy, positive, “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail; high degree of initiative.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office suite, Google Workspace, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English.
Compensation:
Hourly rate of pay is $24.00 for a total of 40 hours per week. Full Time employees of Hispanic Federation also receive benefits and paid time off.
