Job Description
As part of the sales team, it is your responsibility as a Layout Engineer to identify and analyze the customer's needs and transfer those into a successful automated or semi-automated material handling system design, which is a perfect match between the customer's business needs and Vanderlande products and capabilities. You will present this in a clear and understandable way to the customer. In order to come to the best competitive offer, you need to challenge the customer, the sales team, and the internal organization. The projects are Warehouse Automation & Parcel Sortation Systems in North America and you will report to the Manager Sales Engineering.
Job Requirements and Qualifications
- Perform system/throughput material handling calculations and choose appropriate MHE to meet system needs.
- Drawing up 3D models and layout drawings for complex material handling systems independently or with others.
- Oversee MHE layout engineering team's work and priorities, review progress and ensure work performed is done to acceptable level of detail and technical requirements.
- Create and supervise 3D models using Vanderlande's material handling systems, 3rd party vendor equipment, and if necessary using other common and less common MHE equipment to meet the targeted system performance and client requirements.
- Refine the design and layout to fit space constraints and manage multiple objectives from project team and client staff to find an optimal solution balancing the conflicting needs of the multiple groups.
- Create and supervise the development of 3D models and layout drawings for mezzanines, operator positions, maintenance access, equipment supports, and header steel that may impact the system.
- Coordinate with other engineering teams within VI to align on best practices, methodologies, and balancing workload with other layout engineering teams in global offices.
- Mentor and train junior staff in Layout Engineering best practices and principles.
- Lead layout engineering and technical discussions with clients.
- Analyze and optimize system product flow to translate into suitable equipment and ensure reliable performance of material handling systems.
- Utilize knowledge of Vanderlande's equipment, design rules, custom blocks, software, and interaction between process phases to ensure 3D designs are properly installed in project sites.
- Monitor MHE design through project life cycle and implement changes made during the sales, engineering, installation, and commissioning phases to ensure best practices are captured and lessons learned are integrated in a continuous improvement framework.
- Act as primary liaison for layout engineering work done by the team with global and corporate peers in other sales offices, driving medium to long term process improvement in accuracy and efficiency.
- Look for process improvements for the layout engineering team to improve workflow, efficiency, timeliness, quality, and accuracy of deliverables to other functional areas.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum 10 years experience working with complex automated and semi-automated MHE systems. Past experience must be in either the design, engineering, or specification of such systems.
- 5+ years experience (SE1) working on large (>75M) to very large projects (>150M) as either a team lead or senior engineering role. (10+ years experience (Sr LE)
- Experience using 3D modeling software in a system design environment.
- AutoDesk (preferable)
- High level of skill in Navis, Revit, and BIM software.
- Exceptional mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to work in an entrepreneurial international organization, especially working within a project organization, where cooperating with others and being a team member is a natural.
- Willing to travel domestically and internationally (up to 5-10% of your time).
This is a full-time, exempt position, eligible to receive a salary and to participate in an annual performance bonus program. The salary rate listed represents the maximum and minimum starting base pay for this position as of the time of posting. Final salary rate offered will be determined based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience. The annual performance bonus program is preset and not candidate-dependent.
Salary rate: $93,575-103,425
