Position Summary
This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Medical Center. It is expected that the employee demonstrate behavior consistent with our core values: Integrity, Accountability, Best Practices, Compassion and Synergy. The employee shall support Saddleback Medical Center’s strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities. This position requires preparation and staining of tissue specimens for microscopic examination by the pathologist in an accurate, precise and timely manner in order to assist the pathologist in providing appropriate quality patient care in the diagnosis of disease.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
- Ensures all tissue specimens are prepared in a prompt and timely manner according to established guidelines.
- Properly performs routine and special stains.
- Prepares send out requests for IHC staining.
- Properly cleans and maintains Histology Department and equipment to ensure efficient operation of the lab.
- Properly records maintenance in our QC record.
- Adheres to all policies and procedures relating to the Laboratory and Hospital Compliance Plans. Follows the Memorial Health Services Code of Conduct.

- Consistently applies infection control and OSHA policies/procedures.
- Participates in department specific education/training.
- Reads and acknowledges competencies in MPM in a timely manner which includes new and revised policies and procedures.
- Ensures that any unusual occurrences, quality/safety issues, and customer complaints are documented timely using the Variance Reporting process.
- Logs surgical specimens and verifies completeness and accuracy of information. Sections tissue samples using good microtome techniques to produce acceptable quality slides.
- Prepares tissues on slides by examining, fixing and processing the tissue for proper sample preservation, surrounding the tissue with paraffin wax (embedding), cutting a tissue sample with a microtome, mounting the tissue on a slide and staining or dying the sample to emphasize abnormalities.
- Performs preventive maintenance activities as scheduled, documenting on appropriate logs.
- Ensures Patient Safety by taking confirmatory steps in regards to specimen identification.
- Other duties as assigned, needed every Friday and possibly Monday.
Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience
3-5 years of Histology experience preferred.
Knowledge of Histology equipment operation and specimen handling preferred.
Excellent computer skills required.
Needed every Friday and possibly Monday.
Education/License/Certification
Courses in biology, chemistry, and mathematics preferred.
Successful completion of histology internship and ASCP registration preferred.
