The Safety Analyst will serve as the data expert for our health and safety work, improve our data collecting methods, develop data analysis and data visualization tools, and user interface systems to facilitate data access, user-friendly data queries, and data system functionality. Reporting to the Director of Safety, this role collaborates closely with a wide range of cross-functional partners in the SMBSC organization.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with the collection of data from a variety of internal sources, organize data, clean and transform data into needed formats for further analysis.
- Analyze data and develop insightful dashboards, memos, and presentations summarizing the data related to our health and safety performance.
- Conduct quality assurance of input data and calculations, troubleshoot inconsistencies in data or calculations, and assist in completing internal validation.
- Collaborate with operational business units, industry representatives, HR, Risk & Security, Quality, Sustainability, and the H&S Community to improve and digitalize our data collection procedures and systems over time, including the data itself and the tools that will help us to analyze and interpret results and trends.
- Serve as project manager for special safety assignments and safety reviews of engineering and maintenance projects.
- Work with Process Safety leadership and Technology Subject Matter Experts to provide proper interpretation and guidance of the process safety mandatory regulatory requirements and SMBSC recommended practices.
- Lead site JSA update and revalidation effort. Participate in site technical reviews. Own the Process Safety software.
- Lead Plant Technical Reviews and Process Hazard Assessments with the intent to drive these actions to completion in a timely fashion.
- Drive site implementation of Process Safety Fundamentals. Work with Production, Maintenance, and Engineering Leaders to gain resources and support for making changes that will close any identified gaps.
- Participate in site MOC system. Perform process safety reviews on site changes.
- Provide process safety leadership through participation in and follow up from audits, investigations/root cause analysis, mechanical integrity evaluations, training evaluations, new project reviews, and controls.
- Function as a general site Improvement Engineer as process safety duties allow.
Process Safety Engineer Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
- 2+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Previous experience writing MOCs, participating in JSAs, leading RCAs.
- Substantial knowledge of Process Safety tools, process safety management systems, and applicable regulations, codes, and standards preferred.
- High initiative, strong interpersonal skills, and experience working cross-functionally.
- Project management software experience preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong English language skills are a requirement.
- Strong analytical skills and an ability to synthesize information across a broad system to diagnose problems and devise solutions.
- Knowledge or experience with managing health and safety data would be an advantage.
- Comfortable with ambiguity; able to thrive with minimal oversight and process, while keeping leadership informed on progress against deadlines.
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment, possess an abundance of intellectual curiosity, and focus on generating results.
- Effective verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
- Must be able to take on tasks from idea through completion.
- Understanding complex matrix organizational structure, terminology, and practices is a plus.
