Job Summary: The Senior Accountant is responsible for assisting in maintaining the accounting systems while working with the Controller to ensure that policies and procedures are implemented and complied with. The Senior Accountant must be able to perform a variety of accounting tasks with minimal oversight & supervision, work on multiple projects simultaneously, be detail-oriented, and meet deadlines. The position works in concert with and under the supervision of the Chief Accountant/Controller; however, the incumbent is expected to bring a full skill-set allowing them to operate independently in carrying out duties and functions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Help maintain electronic files for all Federal and State Grants
- Assist Controller in monthly closing of financial books and financial audits
- Process and maintain the records of all journal entries
- Process monthly Indirect Cost journal entries for all funds
- Reconcile and maintain monthly bank statements of all accounts
- Verify correct coding and approve requests for payment
- Liaison with vendors and funding agencies as required
- Supervise accounting staff
- Act as the department head in absence of the Chief Accountant
- Other duties as directed by the Controller
Preferred Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- BA/BS degree preferred – may be substituted for accounting experience & 5 years of grant budgeting and reporting. Knowledge and familiarity with governmental accounting software.
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically, Word and Excel
- Good public speaking skills for regular communication with Directors
- Must maintain a high level of professionalism
- Ability to keep accurate records and reports
- Must understand and be committed to confidentiality
- Must be able to work cooperatively and with sensitivity with people from a broad range of backgrounds and experience
