Summary:
Reports to the SNE & Vice President, Patient Care Services. Is responsible for nursing / clinical / operational / managerial issues of assigned departments Med Surg and ICU. The Director of the Clinical Nursing Unit promotes and supports a safe work environment. Communicates significant issues to the VPN.
Responsibilities:
- Develops and maintains effective communication with staff at least two times per month as evidenced by: Daily rounds through unit including off shift rounding at least once per month; Email communication outside C141 of monthly staff meetings including huddles; Employee satisfaction survey results
- Demonstrates use of appropriate management techniques: collaboration; conflict resolution; counseling; interventions
- Attends, participates (or leads) and communicates content of: AM and PM bed meetings or sends designee (90%); VP of Patient Care Services and nurse manager weekly meetings (90%); Department Head meeting (90%); Conducts unit staff meetings (12 times per year minimally)
- Consistent demonstration of: listening; team building/development; positive inter/intradepartmental communication
- Strategic planning, fiscal management, QI: has completed all required regulatory evaluations as assigned including perpetual readiness; has completed annual plan for the department and has correlated with the hospital strategic plan
- Demonstrates fiscal understanding, resource allocation via budget: has explained general hospital financial state to staff at least quarterly; has shown ability to complete realistic budget and takes ownership for variances (completes monthly variance reports on time)
- Maintains proper numbers and categories of staff to accommodate excellent patient care.
- Meets productivity standards consistently unless otherwise stated in variance reports.
- Ensures availability to staff as a resource via rounds, work schedule, and approachability.
- Ensures a minimum of 2 quality improvement measures are selected, followed, reported with resultant process improvement initiatives and measurable: demonstrated need through research of standards and practices, staff input, event report trends, or FMEA; involved staff in data gathering and has communicated status and outcome
- Enforces clinical and administrative policies of Northern Light Health and counsels non-compliance through accountability
- Develops and maintains necessary departmental procedures and policies
- Ensures employee evaluations are completed on time.
- Assists with the organizing and delivery of care to assure continuity of care and accountability for practice
- Recommends or takes disciplinary action where appropriate
- Functions as expert in clinical practice related to assigned roles and responsibilities
- Participates in task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care
- Identifies developmental and training needs of staff and provides/makes provision for such development and training
- Educates staff to HUB/Transfer initiatives and updates
- Integral role in supporting clinical experiences
- Makes recommendations as needed for professional development and highest level of licensure
- Uses advanced clinical knowledge to promote staff involvement in decision making
- Ensures meetings 1:1 with staff as needed
- Develops and plans for care coordination in collaboration with Care Manager
- Provides educational updates that pertain to the organization
- Conducts interdisciplinary team meetings
- Maintains participation in Patient Experience initiatives including rounding and attending meetings on a regular basis
