Community Surgery Anesthesia Technician (ANML HEALTH TCHN 3)Job SummaryIndependent of supervision in a hospital setting, as a significant part of daily duties, responsible for monitoring anesthesia for patients with life-threatening illness or injury, whose conditions are likely to change on a moment-to-moment basis. Facilitates clinical teaching activities, patient care and client service within the Small Animal Community Surgery Service (CSS). Locations include the Gourley Clinical Teaching Center (GCTC) and the Center for Companion Animal Health (CCAH) units. Assist with and facilitate the daily receiving of patients into the CSS. Induce and maintain anesthesia, provide technical support, and coordinate and maintain a daily surgery schedule. Perform and instruct students in proper anesthetic and surgical preparation techniques. Take radiographs and assist with ultrasound examinations of patients. Assist in communication with clients, client education, and admit/discharge patients.
Minimum Qualifications- Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License.
- Experience with animal restraint, placing catheters, and venipuncture.
- Experience maintaining, & monitoring anesthesia in small animal patients.
- Experience responding to emergencies and providing CPR.
- Skill to independently provide intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill or anesthetized patients.
- Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact with a diverse group of students, staff, clinicians and clients and recognize and manage difficult/unpleasant situations and/or individuals.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with aseptic/sterile scrubbing, gowning and gloving techniques.
- Experience handling complications of various surgical procedures; anticipating and responding quickly to surgeons and patient's needs.
- Experience instructing/performing a surgical shave and scrub, safely without contaminating surgery site; transport/move patients to O.R.

Department OverviewThe Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge. Community Surgery is a 5 doctor practice that provides an excellent level of surgical care to dogs and cats with a focus on DVM student instruction. Community Surgery aides many shelter and rescue programs in our surrounding area as well as clients. In addition to spays and neuters, we perform enucleations, prophylactic gastropexy, limb amputations, mastectomy, and more. We are supported by a strong team of technicians and work alongside the specialty services at the VMTH. This position is part of a dedicated team that makes a meaningful contribution to the education of upcoming veterinarians.
