Acute Care Surgery Physician Assistant (PHYSCN AST) Job Summary
To provide independent advanced practice provider clinical expertise to patients and their families on an ongoing basis. This includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical, specialty and standard practice protocols in accordance with the PA practice agreement. This may include non-invasive or invasive procedures, surgical procedures, including operative first assist per approved standardized procedures as identified by the list available on the Medical Staff Office. Patient management decisions are independent where appropriate after assessment of the patient and interdependent with consultation with an attending or other member of the team. PAs are expected to act as an expert resource person for health care providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff.
Provides direct patient care to a diversified complex patient population. Applies knowledge, experience, and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, sets priorities, and uses abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the California Physician Assistant board.

Minimum Qualifications - Two years or greater experience as an inpatient physician assistant.
- American Heart Association (AHA) BLS CPR certification
- American Heart Association (AHA) ACLS certification
- National board certification as a physician assistant (NCCPA) in aligned specialty with practice area.
- California Licensed Physicians Assistant (PA).
- Graduation with a master's degree, or PhD from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Certificate within 3 months of hire.
- Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Judgment skills to effectively meet the needs of patients.
- Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role.
- Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing standards as a billable provider.
Preferred Qualifications - One year or greater recent clinical experience in specialty care of the hiring department highly desirable.
Department Description In collaboration with the Acute Care Surgery Service, the inpatient acute care physician assistant will manage the hospitalized adult surgical patients. This care includes admission, ongoing evaluation and management of acute conditions, discharges and support to various care areas including Emergency Department, Medical/Surgical Ward, Intensive care Unit and Clinic. The inpatient physician assistant will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team. The physician assistant will serve as an expert resource to the nursing staff, residents, students and ancillary services.
