Job Description
Purpose
The Principal Medical Science Liaison (PSL) is a field based scientific expert that strategically supports the scientific and business objectives of a designated therapeutic area (TA) across the product life cycle. They combine a high level of business and deep scientific acumen as well as an executive presence. MSLs are the primary communicators of AbbVie science to health care professionals within a specific geography, and are viewed as peer scientific experts. In addition to their primary MSL responsibilities, the PMSL serves as one of the top scientific experts within the TA and helps translate the complex scientific landscape into recommendations for AbbVie scientific strategy. The PMSL cultivates relationships with national level EEs and proactively identifies opportunities for scientific collaborations and potential TA initiatives.
Responsibilities
This role is considered remote but requires the employee to work within a reasonable distance from the primary cities.
- National Engagement Liaison: Collaborate with internal TA to develop National Expert Engagement plans and manage National Expert relationships. Develop strategy and execution plan, along w/other in-field colleagues, for relevant National and/or Regional Accounts and Networks, including Advocacy Groups as identified by MSL /TA leadership. Assist with the logistics and content of medical Ad Boards and/or other consultancy plans.
- Discovery and Early Asset Development: Partner with Business Development and Venture Capital to explore new disease state areas or potential assets. Identify and build medical relationships with experts in the area and understand latest scientific advances.
- Conference Optimization: Strategic and tactical medical execution for National and Regional US conventions. Partner with TA on the coordination and creation of Mechanism of Disease / Pipeline booth for relevant medical congresses. Creates and implements medical plan regarding scientific information capture and dissemination, as well as pre, post communication to internal and external stakeholders.
- Clinical Trial Support: Designated pipeline asset/study field-medical lead. Provide field-medical teams with relevant clinical trial materials including protocols, up-to-date cross-functional rosters and investigator lists. Work with ASDs to create and disseminate field medical training on pipeline molecules, trial designs, and other relevant scientific topics.
- Clinical Trial Support: Assist with the release of trial data to investigators. Assist with development of message maps, FAQs and coordinate with OEC/Reg as to appropriate field delivery of material and content. Synthesize DPOs, associated with clinical development programs and early pipeline, and provide field insights to relevant internal stakeholders.
- Innovative Execution: Applies imagination and innovation by creating, inventing, and implementing new or better approaches, alternatives and breakthrough ideas that are valued by external customers and within the function.
- Mastery of Scientific and Business Acumen: Presents scientific concepts and clinical information at the highest level of expertise, incorporating applicable foundational skills, which result in maximal impact and value. Confident and effective communication with all levels of management, particularly senior leaders, in a highly professional manner.
- The extent of the PMSL’s responsibilities listed above will be determined by the needs of the TA and the business. The PMSL will report to the Field Medical Lead.
- Additional responsibilities and customized geography (may overlap with 1+ regions) of this role determined by TA leads and Field-Medical Lead. Position will be 70% field-focused customer facing and 30% internal.

The candidate must live in the territory or willing to self-relocate within the territory. The majority of the territory includes (All of the US).
- Advanced medical or scientific degree required. Doctorate strongly preferred in a health science or clinical discipline. Significant industry experience in relevant therapeutic area may be accepted in lieu of education requirements.
- Greater than or equal to 5 years’ experience required with demonstrated leadership success in the following areas: pharmaceutical field-based experience and pharmaceutical industry related experience. Must have previous experience as an MSL at AbbVie.

- Teamwork is a mandatory requirement as it involves internal/external networking in the district, region, franchise and across departments. Ability to work in cross-functional teams and lead without authority.
- Strong analytical, conceptual and administrative skills. Excellent communication skills: oral, written and presentation. Excellent problem solving ability in concert with strong negotiation skills. Competent to use standard computer technologies including integrated business software (word processing, spreadsheet) and other common applications.
- Demonstrated exceptional business acumen.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities. Must be able to identify and analyze the needs of the business and translate problems into business opportunities.
- An essential requirement of the position is to meet health care industry representative (HCIR) credentialing requirements to gain entry into facilities and organizations that in your assigned territory. These HCIR credentialing requirements may include, but are not limited to, background checks, drug screens, and proof of immunization/vaccination for various diseases.
- Must be willing to travel up to 75% of your time.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
