OT Job Description - Guiding Light Academy
Occupational therapists at GLA support a student’s ability to participate in desired daily school activities or occupations (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2016). School OTs support academic and non-academic functional outcomes in schools by completion of the following tasks:
1. Assessment Responsibilities
- Record review (reviewing progress student has made over the past three years)
- Environmental analysis (student observation in classroom environment on multiple occasions to develop an accurate baseline of environmental factors that impact occupation/activities for students)
- Conducting evaluations and assessments
- Administration
- Scoring and interpretation of scores
- Writing summary of scores and documentation
- Task analysis of occupation (determining areas of student difficulty and strengths)
- Teacher interviews
- Parent interviews
- Parent and teacher communication to support in completion of assessments/questionnaires
- Documentation and presentation of results in re-evaluation meeting
2. Treatment Responsibilities
- Provide Direct OT minutes as mandated by student IEP (individual sessions)
- OT groups
- Support behavioral management
- Task analysis of occupation (determining area of occupation/activity that is difficult for or a relative strength of a student to determine treatment priorities/direct treatment)
- Reduction of barriers within a school environment (providing accommodations to support student participation in a classroom or functional activity/occupation)
- Provide AT
- Address physical limitations
- Promote self-advocacy for students
- Development and implementation of sensory programs in the OT room and in the classroom
- Therapeutic material management (inventory, ordering, documentation of equipment requests)
3. IEP Team Responsibilities
- Create and participate in IEP plans (goals, accommodations)
- Document Present Level of Functional performance
- Help create the adverse effect statement
- Create goals and goal benchmarks
- Document accommodations
- Complete re-integration forms indicating students current needs to aid in determination that student is in the least restrictive environment
- Determine/document student’s OT minutes for the current IEP period
- Participation in meetings
- Participation in annual review meetings with IEP team
- Participation in progress meetings
- Pre-IEP planning and collaboration meetings
- Quarterly Progress report
4. Administrative and Documentation Responsibilities
- Data collection for sessions
- Notes (consult, session, communication with team members)
- Management of files and student OT minute time sheets
- Quarterly Progress reports (Documentation of progress on all student goals and annual benchmarks)
5. Collaborative and Consultative Responsibilities
- Collaborate with educational team (parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, RS providers)
- Training of teachers and paraprofessionals
- Support parent engagement and education
- Parent communication
- Team communication
- Classroom check-ins
- Participation in community outings with students to promote participation
6. Program Improvement and Professional Development Responsibilities
- Create plan for current and future student needs
- OT team development
- Weekly department meetings to collaborate, case studies, etc.
- Advocate for individuals under IDEA (individuals with disabilities education act)
- Professional development (GLA professional development days, GLA training, OT specific training)
- Collaboration on school building updates
7. Mandated reporter
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $60,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
