A Brief Overview:
This position is designed to provide non-invasive vascular exams independently in accordance with ICAVL standards. This position will serve as a mentor for Tech 1 providing hands-on training and supervision of Tech 1. Tech 2 will work with the manager on additional projects such as equipment selection and evaluation, revision of test protocols, quality assurance issues, and the ICAVL accreditation.
What you will do:
- Knowledge and application of NorthShore policies and procedures that apply to job and area of responsibility.
- Perform vascular testing independently.
- Conduct arterial, venous, and carotid imaging.
- Check questions regarding exams with the Manager prior to patient leaving the department.
- Record preliminary findings in all patients' charts.
- Provide legible, concise reports for all in-patients.
- Phone all out-patient venous preliminaries to ordering physicians.
- Notify nurses, interns, or referring physicians of positive venous results on in-patients.
- Take responsibility for day-to-day decisions for the department to run smoothly.
- Coordinate the daily schedule, coordinating exams with nursing units and physician offices.
- Assist reading physicians in locating and organizing materials as needed.
- Notify attending physicians of abnormal findings, follow up with physicians' instructions, and relay information as needed.
- Respond appropriately in an emergency.
- Assist clerical staff with clerical duties including scheduling, phone duties, faxing reports, and ordering supplies.
- Help prepare paperwork to ensure hospital and physician maximum reimbursement.
- Read available material in the vascular lab to learn anatomy, physics, and vascular technology.
- Utilize manager and vascular lab physicians as mentors to increase learning of vascular technology.
- Actively participate in the learning and training process.
- Attend outside CAVA (Chicago Area Vascular Association) conferences pertaining to vascular technology.
- Operate ultrasound equipment in the operating room.
- Be available on demand to assist the surgeon with ultrasound knobology.
- Train Tech 1 in knobology.
- Maintain and clean equipment daily.
- Notify manager of mechanical problems for repairs.
- Assist physicians and manager with delegated duties.
- Assist manager with ICAVL accreditation.
- Maintain patient comfort and safety during vascular testing.
- Monitor patients' pain levels during vascular testing; consult with patients' nurses if needed.
- Ensure side rails are up following exams.
- Assist patients with bathroom needs.
- Rotate to other NorthShore vascular sites as needed.
- Function independently at other NorthShore vascular sites.
- Operate equipment at other vascular sites.
- Prepare paperwork to ensure hospital and physician reimbursement.
- Have a good understanding of CPT and ICD 9 coding.
- Obtain pertinent history from patients prior to exams.
- Take responsibility for physician reimbursement forms and complete required information.
What you will need:
- Diploma or Vocational Degree Required.
- At least 2 years of vascular experience in the hospital setting.
- Only those with greater than 2 years of experience as a vascular technician are recommended to be placed in this position/grade. New hires with related but not specific experience as a vascular technician are recommended to be hired into level I.
- Graduate from an accredited ultrasound/vascular tech program. Must take RVT within 2 years of employment.
- RVT, CRVT or eligible. If not certified or registered, must obtain RVT.
