Under the direction of the Director of Finance, the Staff Accountant II completes the processing, maintenance, and reporting of financial information of the Firm in accordance with policies established by Shaheen & Gordon PA. This position works closely with the Accounting Supervisor with cross-training in all the same functions.
Job Responsibilities and Performance Standards:
- General Accounting
- Use source documentation to enter transactions into the general ledger system.
- Complete activities necessary to close fiscal periods in accordance with the monthly closing schedule.
- Perform self-audits of Finance transactions to ensure that the processing, accounting for, and reporting is being done in accordance with Firm policy.
- Complete monthly reconciliations of the general ledger balance sheet accounts ensuring that all adjustments are made in a timely manner.
- Participate in the preparation of monthly financial statements and other reporting.
- Assist in the preparation of periodic reports requested by management.
- Payroll
- Complete all payroll transactions in accordance with Firm policies under the direction of the Accounting Supervisor. This includes maintenance of employee time records, benefit accruals, department allocations, and payroll tax remittances.
- Cash Management
- Record client payments to ensure timely deposits to the Firm’s bank accounts and adherence to Trust account rules.
- Develop, implement, and maintain process improvements to achieve a streamlined and simplified accounting process as it relates to cash processing.
- Ensure cross-training of the entire billing cycle as well as accurate and complete billing cycle documentation.
- Budget
- Participate in the development of the annual Firm budget.
- Fixed Assets
- Record fixed assets according to Firm policies and ensure all fixed asset balances are proper for the month and depreciation is accurately recorded.
- Perform special accounting and finance related projects as assigned which includes the bookkeeping for small property entities and fixed assets.
Qualifications:
- Experience
- Four to six years of experience in an accounting or finance department.
- A history of progressively responsible accounting or finance positions in a professional services environment, preferably a Law Firm.
- Proficient in accounting software.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
- Education
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required; a combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Physical Environment
- Physical surroundings are pleasant and comfortable with minimum exposure to injury or hazards.
- Social/Psychological Conditions
- Some occasional stress due to periodic or cyclical workload pressures and deadlines.
- Physical Effort
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds.
- Periodic eye strain.
