The ideal candidate will possess certain essential qualities including strong client service skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work comfortably with all levels throughout the company. The responsibilities of the Tax Associate will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Become familiar with the firm’s policies and procedures.
- Effectively communicate with clients to receive information necessary to complete the engagement with minimum disruption to the client.
- Understand the rules, regulations, and Code of Professional Conduct of the AICPA.
- Attend and participate in professional education including in-house industry group meetings and participate in professionally sponsored training sessions.
- Obtain a working knowledge of research techniques and the various research sources in the firm library.
- Use the firm’s software programs to automate the process from trial balance, financial statement, and the tax return. This may include using technology to link client’s software with the firm’s.
- Reconcile client records to trial balance, which may include analytical procedures, and perform schedule computations of pre-paids, accruals, property, and equipment, and calculate depreciation expense.
- May be required to perform all phases of an engagement, including report writing and tax return preparation.
- Assist in the development and training of junior staff.
Generally, a Tax Associate will be given a wide variety of accounting and tax assignments under the supervision of different professionals. Performance reviews are based on the quality of work, application of accounting knowledge, and time management skills. The amount of time a Tax Associate stays in this position is based on individual performance levels.
