About the JobSandy Spring Bank is currently recruiting for a Small Business Underwriter. The successful candidate will be responsible for underwriting, decisioning, structuring, and administering small business loans, both secured and unsecured. Duties include complete and accurate input of financial information into the Loan Origination platform including spreading business and personal financial information/tax returns. Ensure that each loan complies with established Sandy Spring Bank Credit Policy, Small Business Underwriting Procedures Guidelines, and Business Banking Product Guide. Provides support to Business Banking, Branch Managers, Relationship Managers, Portfolio Managers, and Portfolio Administrators as it relates to small business loans.
MAJOR JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Underwriting
Demonstrates sound underwriting knowledge and skills with new requests, renewals, and modifications of existing loans. Performs analysis of borrower and guarantor and determines strengths and weaknesses with appropriate mitigants. Ensures all information within the Loan Origination Platform is accurate and spreads financial information based upon standard credit underwriting methodology. Reviews all output and determines if the credit request is within Small Business Lending parameters and the Bank’s Credit Policy for approval. Establishes loan terms and structure based upon the loan purpose, sources of repayment, collateral value, etc. Processes declines in adherence with all federal regulations and bank policy. Demonstrates a complete understanding and in-depth knowledge of SSB Credit Policy and credit underwriting. Demonstrates complete understanding and knowledge of Regulatory requirements as it relates to lending. Underwrites and decisions ACH exposure requests with the established guidelines, policies & procedures. - Portfolio Administration
Demonstrates a complete understanding of loan risk rating system and properly grades loans. Completes periodic loan renewals and reviews and recommends potential watch list loans and transfers to Special Assets. Escalates problem credits as needed. Determines and obtains required due diligence for approvals. Facilitates settlements where needed. Assists the Asset & Quality group with problem loans in developing an action plan for loan workouts including restructuring. Supports Portfolio Services Coordinator in maintaining CMP identified high-risk borrowers. Creates and submits Bank correspondence as needed. - Maintenance and Servicing
Responds to client questions and requests promptly. Works in cooperation with Small Business, Loan Support, Loan Servicing, Relationship Managers, Portfolio Managers, and Community Banking to resolve questions, complaints, and or errors. Resolves problems on accounts to the satisfaction of the client and benefit to the bank.
Required SkillsKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Work requires a broad level of professional experience in commercial or small business lending to include thorough knowledge of small business underwriting guidelines and related regulations.
- Position requires a minimum of 5 years direct work experience as an underwriter or credit analyst in small business or commercial underwriting. Successful completion of a formalized credit training program is highly preferred.
- Underwriting of larger and more complex credits dependent upon experience and demonstrated knowledge.
- Must be able to work on several loan applications simultaneously while meeting established deadlines as required.
- Sound knowledge of legal structures that pertain to the commercial lending industry, UCC requirements, and compliance.
- Ability to utilize standard PC based software to prepare correspondence, reports, and other documents as needed.
- Strong communication skills are needed to effectively work with internal/external clients to explain products and interpret policy.
- Strong well-developed interpersonal skills in order to facilitate cooperation among staff and those departments with which this department has direct, frequent interaction.
- Advanced problem-solving skills are needed to find solutions to problems that are technically complex and require collection, interpretation, and analysis of data from diverse sources.
- Work is under minimal supervision, where the work requires independent judgment in the interpretation of existing policies and procedures and the selection of alternative work routines.
SPECIFIC PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work requires reasonable mobility in and around the work area. Ability to use standard computer and phone systems is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Normal office environment where there is almost no discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise, or other disagreeable elements. Work includes little or no potential exposure to hazardous conditions. Must be able to travel to remote company and/or client locations.
