Job Description
Distinguishing Features of Work: This is administrative work assisting the City Engineer by providing a broad scope of administrative services that support and facilitate coordination and cohesiveness related to transportation planning. The position is routinely responsible for oversight of parking mobility efforts, oversight of a parking management company, working with the Traffic Engineer to set parking fees, and multimodal transportation planning. This position will develop and implement processes or plans to carry out special assignments and projects designed to achieve objectives set forth by the City Engineer. Work is directed and reviewed through the establishment of goals and subsequent evaluation of progress toward goal attainment.
Workdays and Hours - Monday - Friday: 8:00am - 5:00pm
Examples of Work Performed
- Facilitates the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board.
- Represents the City with outside groups, coordinates engineering functions with the work of other departments and agencies.
- Plans, delegates, and evaluates the work of clerical, administrative, and/or technical support staff providing a variety of services including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and grant management and reporting.
- Evaluates, develops, modifies, and/or implements financial and administrative support processes and procedures.
- Monitors and ensures compliance with organization-level policies and procedures that apply to the operation.
- Monitors administrative policies and procedures supporting the operation for continued compliance and effectiveness and initiates change as needed.
- Identifies and accesses information resources.
- Analyzes and summarizes information as needed to support the Department in project planning and/or responding to public issues.
- May conduct oral presentations regarding process changes or topics researched for the Department.
- Coordinates special projects involving multiple Divisions.
- Composes correspondence, brochures, press releases, and other narrative material for the department as assigned.
- Serves as coordinator and/or liaison for special programs, including but not limited to public information, and state and federally funded program contract compliance.
- Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work
- Thorough knowledge of information resources and information evaluation and reporting techniques.
- Knowledge of the principles and procedures of financial and managerial accounting. Considerable knowledge of the practices and principles of municipal government, and Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT).
- Ability to use a computer to access, interpret, and record information.
- Knowledge of electronic spreadsheet development, using basic mathematical and descriptive statistical operations.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other Departments, representatives of other organizations and the public.
- Ability to effectively plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
- May require the ability to acquire and maintain a Kansas driver's license.
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
- Graduation from a 4-year college with degree in business or public administration, urban planning, transportation is required.
- 4 years of increasingly responsible administrative experience which includes budgetary accountability required.
- 4 years of administrative experience in a municipal environment or directly related to the specific operations of the hiring department preferred.
- 3 years of supervisory experience preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement. Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
