The Town of Groton, Connecticut is looking for a qualified and experienced Economic Development Specialist to help shape Groton’s future. The chosen individual will be dynamic, industrious and highly motivated. The Economic Development Specialist will provide professional level support in the creation of economic development marketing strategies, efforts to attract and retain business and industry and the implementation of the Town's economic development plans. This is a non-union, exempt, full-time position.
The Economic and Community Development Division is a major component of the Office of Planning & Development Services and is comprised of a highly skilled and unified team of economic developers, planners, building inspectors, and technical and administrative staff. This team has been recognized for its groundbreaking work and was the recipient of a 2023 CEDAS “Best Practices” (Gold) Award.

POSITION OVERVIEW
This position provides professional level support in the creation of economic development marketing strategies, efforts to attract and retain business and industry and the implementation of the Town's economic development plans. In addition, the position supports activities which have a direct and positive effect on business profitability and competitiveness, including but not limited to identifying business sustainability opportunities that preserve or create jobs. Also, promotes the Town and assists in creating a business-friendly community for existing and new businesses. Works with considerable independence and initiative under the general direction of the supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over clerical staff. Work is evaluated through conferences, work products and reports and on the basis of results achieved.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with a Bachelor's Degree in Business, Economics, urban or regional Planning, or related field and four (4) years of experience in economic or community development or related field, or a Master's Degree, as described above, and two (2) years related experience. A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the responsibilities of this position may be considered in lieu of stated education and experience requirements. Well-developed computer skills with demonstrated proficiency in data base management, spreadsheets, graphics, presentation software and word processing. Must possess sound analytical skills and the ability to clearly convey the information being analyzed.
This position requires knowledge of economic development principles, practices and techniques; laws, ordinances, regulations and policies of various government agencies as they affect the business community and economic development efforts; principles and techniques and objectives of public relations and information; principles and techniques of marketing and promotion; current regional economic development and demographic trends; research methods and techniques; basic principles of urban and/or regional planning.
Criminal background, drug testing, and driving record checks required prior to employment.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Certification as an Economic Development Professional.
