Position Summary
The Director, Accounting assists with the management of GSEM financial operations by performing and overseeing the processing of financial transactions within the scope of GSEM policies and procedures, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and transparent stewardship. The position researches and implements best practices based on industry knowledge and management directives.
At Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, most of our roles work in a hybrid capacity (in office, remote, and/or in the field). Details will be provided during the interview process.
Essential Job Duties
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records using accounting software.
- Perform a variety of accounting tasks, including recording and reconciling financial transactions, assisting in the monthly closing of Council books, distributing financial reports, and assisting in the development and monitoring of annual budgets in collaboration with the Controller and budget managers.
- Track budget variances and provide regular reports to management.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad hoc financial statements, documents, and reports as required.
- Process accounts receivable, including all revenue and deposits received via the Retail Shop, Product Program sales, Fund Development contributions and pledges, cash receipts, and other revenue transactions and deposits.
- Oversee and monitor Girl Scout troop bank accounts, investigating and reporting troop fund mismanagement to the Councils outside collection agency and/or local law enforcement as appropriate.
- Collaborate with program managers to track and report on grant expenditures, ensuring compliance with grant financial reporting requirements.
- Conduct financial analysis to support strategic decision-making, identifying areas for cost savings and efficiency improvements.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting principles, regulations, and legal requirements.
- Promote a climate of courtesy, respect, and professionalism to staff, volunteers, members, and the general public.
- Serve as a collaborative team member, working to advance the mission of Girl Scouts.
- Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
- Six (6) years of accounting experience.
- Experience in a non-profit environment is preferred.

- Knowledge of accounting principles and regulations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, integrated financial systems, and other general office equipment.
- Ability to manage processes and meet deadlines.

- Organized thinker with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.

- Ability to work well in a fast-paced, dynamic organization.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 75% of the time operating a computer, including navigating websites, software platforms, spreadsheets and both electronic and paper documents.
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copier, and computer printer.
- Occasionally positions self to maintain files in file cabinets.
- May need to move boxes weighing up to 25 pounds across office for various needs.
- The ability to observe details at close range and at a distance.
- Is required to drive/ operate an automobile.
Work Environment
Constantly works in an indoor professional office environment. Exposed to moderate noise levels.
