Project Manager, Strategic Capital Group
Position Summary:
The successful candidate will be leading capital project teams and coordinating estimating, design work and construction with selected partners (OEMs, engineering consultants, construction firms, etc.) through all project phases. Using the FEL process and project execution plans and tools, he/she will help Domtar deliver optimal business results. Leading these efforts, the candidate will work to establish business & technology objectives and to ensure projects meet mill, technical, schedule, safety, cost, and management of change requirements.
Travel expectations for position are dependent on potential hire location. Currently remote (outside of Greenville, SC) hires would require travel up to 50% (dependent on project assignment and responsibilities). Office based hires (at Domtar’s Greenville, SC office) would require travel up to 25 – 30% (depending on project and responsibilities).
Responsibility / Accountability:
The Project Manager is responsible for assisting the Business Group in the accomplishment of its objectives by leading and managing the day-to-day execution of major capital projects. He/she has overall accountability for setting and meeting safety, technical/engineering, quality, cost and schedule goals for the engineering, procurement, and construction of capital projects. Desired candidate is a self-starter who can manage day-to-day tasks to maintain project schedule.
Job Description:
The successful candidate will report to the VP of Strategic Capital while coordinating projects with operations, procurement, engineering firms and business leaders. Through the application of project management principles, the Project Manager will lead and direct all aspects of capital projects including estimating, design, and construction. Duties will include leading or working with various project teams in scope development, equipment specification, estimating, overall design, engineering reviews, risk & change management, construction, and commissioning and start-up efforts.
Leadership:
- Strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills and the ability to work with all levels from management to operators.
- Support, negotiate and assist in developing contracts with procurement leaders to secure equipment, labor, and services to meet project objectives.
- Compile, prepare and present information for updates to management throughout the 3-phase Front-End-Loading process, Detailed Design, and Construction.
Desired Skills And Experience:
Professional Experience/Qualifications:
- Provide safety leadership from design through construction for major capital projects to set and maintain safety expectations. This includes ”Safety in Design” to install equipment for the safest operation by company’s operating employees.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, TEAMS, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Familiar with Autodesk AutoCad and Adobe Acrobat or Bluebeam for marking up and reviewing engineering drawings.
- Intimate working knowledge of Front-End-Loading (FEL) practices including objectives of each phase (business case, scope development, detailed design, risk & cost management, and field execution).
- Lead and provide guidance to facilities on Safe Work Practices, OSHA, and other governing codes as applicable.
- Coordinate engineering activities (mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, etc.) to ensure effective project execution between all disciplines.
- Lead vendor technical and commercial evaluations and development of bid tabs.
- Lead development of Decision Support Packages (DSPs) to document and explain significant technical decisions including economic & technical evaluation of design options studied.
- Travel to range from 25%-50% depending upon size and number of projects at any given time. Travel time may increase during key construction windows and start-up and commissioning of capital projects.
- Paper industry and auxiliary design / execution / operating experience preferred.
- Professional Engineering license in US and/or Canada a plus.
- General knowledge of equipment used in the paper industry including paper machine components, fiber line equipment, boilers, compressors, pumps, rotating equipment, heat exchange/recovery systems, valves, piping designs, etc.
- Knowledge of relevant technical processes and the associated engineering principles.
- Provide leadership for the organization through a commitment to safety, environmental performance and continuous improvement.

Other:
- Position may require working in engineering design offices, contractor’s office and at the construction sites (Domtar manufacturing facilities). Travel to engineering contractor offices and project site(s) is required.
- Travel requirements will vary with project assignments.
