Overview:
Princeton University Library (PUL) seeks a part-time (75% duty time) Senior Bibliographic Specialist for Japanese language acquisitions. Reporting directly to the Japanese Cataloging Librarian within PUL’s Cataloging and Metadata Services department, this position supports the East Asian Library collection and the Marquand Library Japanese art collections by creating Japanese monographic firm orders and standing orders, using a combination of various vendor-supplied machine-readable records and existing OCLC bibliographic records to generate new orders. The incumbent follows all the local acquisition procedures and critically evaluates all the different types of Japanese publications on order, monitoring existing orders and resolving issues retrospectively, when necessary. Additionally, the Senior Bibliographic Specialist contributes to copy-cataloging as needed.
PUL is one of the world's leading research libraries, supporting a diverse community of 5,200 undergraduates, 2,700 graduate students, 1,200 faculty members, and many visiting scholars. Its holdings include more than 7 million printed volumes, 85 thousand manuscripts, 2 million non-print items, and extensive collections of digital text, data, and images. The Library employs a dedicated and knowledgeable staff of more than 300 staff working in a large central library, 9 specialized branches, and 3 storage facilities.
Responsibilities:
- Ordering physical and online resources for the library collection.
- Monitoring open orders.
- Identifying problems related to existing order types and resolving discrepancies.
- Managing batch loading of bibliographic and order records.
- Communicating effectively with the vendors and conducting negotiations in a timely fashion.
- Performing some copy-cataloging using the OCLC database, as needed.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- 1-3 years working in an academic or library environment.
- Complete fluency in Japanese language.
- Excellent communication skills in written and oral English.
- Ability to work well in a team-based environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Alma or other ILS systems, OCLC, and other major bibliographic databases.
- Familiarity with cataloging and metadata record structures (including the MARC21 metadata schema).
- Facility with email, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office applications.
