Fire Protection Analyst

This position performs highly advanced complex review of plans and specifications for fire suppression, fire detection, hazardous materials, and high pile storage to ensure that all new construction and tenant improvements meet fire and life safety code provisions; assists in the preparation and adoption of fire codes and fire prevention ordinances and standards; and supervises plan check and permit staff.
The Ontario Fire DepartmentAs the third largest city in San Bernardino County, Ontario encompasses over 50 square miles and is home to over 185,000 residents. Ontario Fire Department serves these residents from 11 strategically located fire stations, with a daily staffing level of 74 sworn firefighters.
The essential functions typically performed by the Fire Protection Analyst include the following:
- Supervises and directs the activities of staff including employee selection, work assignments, performance evaluations, employee development, disciplinary action, and complaint resolution.
- Develops and maintains the City's fire protection analysis and chemical hazards program.
- Performs fire safety analysis and makes recommendations regarding hazardous materials storage, high piled storage, spray booths, dust collection systems, conveyors, engineered systems, and other highly complex systems.
- Reviews, evaluates, and approves building plans and specifications, fire alarm systems and calculations, standpipe materials, and other possible hazards.
- Interprets and provides technical advice and assistance relating to fire and building codes.
- Inspects construction sites and existing buildings and facilities for conformance to codes and standards.
- Assists with the technical training of code enforcement and fire suppression, fire protection, and inspection staff.
- Conducts research and tests on materials and systems to evaluate their safety and application.
- Performs special research and provides technical support in fire investigations.
- Testifies as an expert witness in civil or criminal proceedings.
- Investigates and makes recommendations to staff on requests for alternate materials or methods or variations in applicable regulations.
- Performs legislative analysis on proposed municipal code revisions.
- Confers with developers regarding prospective business development projects.
Education
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university in
major coursework in fire protection, civil, chemical, or mechanical engineering, or construction engineering technology. Three years of increasingly responsible experience in fire protection systems analysis work including commercial and residential plan review and planning practices.
Certification
Must possessallof the following certifications issued by the California State Fire Marshal (CSFM):
- CSFM Fire Inspector I Certification (or Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, & 1D course certificates)
- CSFM Fire Inspector II Certification (or Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C, & 2D course certificates)
- CSFM Plans Examiner Certification (or Plans Examiner 1A, 1B, & 1C course certificates)
(Equivalent certifications may be considered upon department review)

License
Valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
